About Us
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. Our RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of space research and technology development, with involvement in over 200 space missions.

About The Role
We now have vacancies within RAL Space for full time and part time staff to produce and fit the thermal insulation blankets that are used to protect satellites and their equipment in space.

Our Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blankets are hand-made from sheets of reflective material, often with netting to separate the layers. The design and folding of the blankets allow them to fit around space hardware, even if they have a complex shape. MLI blankets are used on almost every satellite that is launched and are critical in protecting from the cold of space.

You will be responsible for:

  • defining the shape of the blankets to fit hardware
  • working in a cleanroom to manufacture the blankets
  • packing completed blankets
  • helping to fit blankets to spacecraft and instruments
  • carrying out basic stock control of materials and parts.

MLI blanket manufacture requires particular care, attention to detail and patience. You will be required to follow written and verbal instructions to ensure that the blankets are manufactured to specification.

About You
This role would suit a candidate with experience of practical work or hobbies where delicate operations with hands are needed (such as dress making, model making and handicrafts).

You will demonstrate an understanding of relevant drawings and plans along with computing skills required to review drawings and maintain records.

If you wish to discuss the post please contact Dr Bryan Shaughnessy (
