ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron source — providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of science and engineering in the UK and abroad.

We are currently looking to recruit a lab support assistant to work in the Experimental Operations Division as part of the Instrument Operations Group and Lab Support Group.

In this role you will be required to help maintain our laboratories to a high standard – for example washing glassware and general tidying and cleaning of lab space. You would also be expected to stock take and replenish lab items when required. Collect and deliver valuable technical equipment to and from other institutes using STFC lab vehicles when needed. Collect deliveries from our central stores and distribute parcels to the relevant team members on a daily basis. Calibrate and maintain scientific equipment such as pH meters and balances. Interact and guide service agents visiting site to carry out maintenance on specific lab equipment. In addition carry out daily checks on services to the labs such as checking and replacing cylinders of suppled gas.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • C grade at GCSE in English (or equivalent)
  • 4 other GCSE’s (or equivalent)
  • clean  UK driving license
  • have worked in a laboratory setting or Engineering environment
  • awareness of Health and Safety good working practice in a lab/workshop environment.

Desirable:

  • C grade at GCSE in a Science subject

Interview Criteria

  • highly motivated and able to work well as part of a team
  • willingness to learn new skills and techniques
  • able to work to deadlines
  • have worked in a laboratory setting or Engineering environment
