The Manufacturing Facility of Technology Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory has about 20 skilled craftsmen, technicians and support staff who supply mechanical manufacturing, Metrology, additive manufacture and technical procurement for RAL  and other customers on the Harwell campus. Manufacturing solutions have to be found for complex and innovative scientific equipment.

You will lead the multi-disciplinary Manufacturing Facility Group, developing the facilities and managing and co-ordinating the work of:

  • the internal workshops,( five CNC VMCs, two CNC Lathes and a large variety of conventional manual machines and sheet metal working equipment
  • project technicians
  • outside manufacture procurement  (about £3M per year)
  • inspection & metrology ( contact CMMs, non contact CMM, optical equipment and a selection of scanning FARO arms)
  • additive manufacturing  (plastic and metal).

Providing customers with an efficient, high quality service, you will be responsible for the continued development of the group, including but not limited to sharing of experience and best practice, technical consulting and design support. You will also be responsible for setting up and managing the framework contracts for Outside Manufacture through UK Shared Business Services.

The role includes management of the group’s delegated budget and advising senior management of the priorities to develop the facility in line with the STFC’s needs. The latter includes development of business cases for capital investment in the workshops and metrology, as well as other facility infrastructure. You will be responsible for staffing of the facilities, leading the recruitment of facility staff as required.

A key part of your responsibilities is the management of safety within the facility; this involves preparing and updating all risk assessments and procedures, and ensuring that all staff have completed training appropriate to their roles.  In addition the postholder may be required to act as the departmental safety contact at RAL; coordinating departmental health and safety initiatives, supporting the Department management in instilling a safety culture, providing advice to local management, and acting as the primary contact for STFC corporate SHE Group.

 You will negotiate with scientists and engineers at all levels to provide technical project support  for their programmes of work. Professional advice is provided to customers at all levels on manufacturing techniques and aspects of design to ease manufacture and metrology.

 You will be a key part of the apprentice Training scheme at  RAL, advising on suitable training needs and providing training for apprentices during their work placements.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria


  • a thorough understanding of production engineering and the different manufacturing processes will be required to fulfil this role
  • you must understand all core machining, fabrication and welding operations, and be able to identify the optimum process to be adopted for the efficient manufacture of any mechanical engineering component from delicate positioning devices through to bulk shielding blocks.
  • you must demonstrate extremely strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to lead and manage change.


  • experience of procurement with respect to the Public Contract Regulations would be an advantage.

This post will lead the setting up of framework contracts with external companies for the supply of mechanical components for STFC through UK-SBS.
