About The Role

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Full Stack WebApp Developer to join our team to contribute the development of a minimal viable product (MVP) for a potential start-up company.The MVP will deliver easy-to-use interfaces to deliver modelling and simulation methodologies to companies in the formulated product sector. The MVP will facilitate easy access to high performance and/or cloud computing platforms allowing users to set up, run simulations and receive results. Using cutting edge technologies you will use their programming skills to develop highly functional and user-friendly interfaces to ensure a positive user experience. We are looking for a candidate to lead the main web-app development based on criteria set out by a science team.

Responsibilities will include:

  • leading the development of web applications to facilitate easy access to modelling and simulation techniques
  • participating in the entire development life cycle, from requirements gathering to deployment
  • ensuring developed platforms are secure and scalable
  • working closely with the Hartree Centre science and HPC team to develop a MVP to demonstrate to potential customers and investors
  • leading the design and implementation of technical solutions/architecture
  • creation of high-quality user-orientated information such as user-documents, training courses and web pages
  • make site visits to clients and liaise with commercial partners and develop collaborations
  • meeting with potential partners to develop understanding of requirements
  • perform use case analysis and capture user requirements.

You will be expected to communicate effectively with a range of STFC staff and external partners.  Occasional UK will be required to attend meetings, conferences and presentations (there is also the possibility of international travel). Whilst the initial term for this post is 18 months, it is anticipated that this will increase pending securing further funds. Ideally the successful candidate will move to the spun-out company.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Full Stack WebApp Developer who likes a challenge. This opportunity will involve close working with scientists! You will not be afraid of being the lead developer who will make decisions about the direction of the work, code choices and development platforms. As such we are looking for someone with commercial web development experience with a portfolio available to showcase your skills.

You will have a positive “can do” attitude and a proven track record of delivering products into the hands of users. Someone who would like the opportunity to steer business direction and to develop a project from scratch. You will be self-motivated and able to work with minimum of technical supervision.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, along with effective presentational skills to deliver to technical and non-technical audiences.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • demonstrable commercial experience of developing web applications for deployment on multiple platforms (e.g., tablet, laptop)
  • commercial web development experience (or equivalent) witha portfolio available to showcase your skills
  • be comfortable setting up and configuring full stack environments including experience with Web servers such as Nginx/Apache, WebApp Containers, NoSQL and SQL RDBMs systems such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL and related technologies such as object relation mapping
  • experience in ‘Enterprise’ application development and integration including technologies such as JMS/asynchronous-messaging, Web Services/REST, JSON, Web security, XMLbinding and validation frameworks and availability monitoring and log management
  • proven experience of the entire development life cycle from requirements gathering, unit and integration testing to deployment
  • experience developing applications using HTML5/CSS and JavaScript
  • front end frameworks such as: JQuery, React, Ember.js, Angular.js and development of both MVC and Single Page Applications (SPAs).
  • experience with backend enterprise frameworks such as Java/Spring, Python/Django and Node.js
  • knowledge of web security, authentication/authorization and Single Sign On (SSO) frameworks such as OAuth, OpenID Connect and SAML
  • experience of version control e.g., GitHub
  • cloud deployment experience such as CloudFoundry and Docker
  • project management experience

Desirable:

  • experience in Linux system administration
  • experience with Docker and container management e.g. Kubernetes
  • interest in visual design
  • Jenkins or similar CI Integration tools
  • experience of big data/data analytics.
