About The Role:
This is an outstanding opportunity for experienced cheminformatics specialists to participate in cutting-edge research across a range of chemical industry sectors.  STFC’s Hartree Centre combines the UK’s premier data-centric computing environment with the world’s most talented researchers, engineers and software developers. With these tools and talent, combined with multi-million pound government backing, we provide an outcome-based collaborative R&D service that enables UK industry and academia to develop better products, services and processes. Working at a high specialist level you will work on industry focused research agendas using cheminformatics techniques. As a senior specialist you will liaise closely with industry and academic partners to gather requirements, understand technical problems and deliver solutions to research problems. Beyond this you will participate in developing new collaborations with potential partners contributing to the overall mission of the Hartree Centre.

Your duties will include

  • application of chem-informatics techniques to industry motivated themes
  • development of new techniques and workflows
  • working closely with Hartree Centre partners to gather user requirements
  • presenting details of work carried out to interested parties
  • identification of new opportunities and following up on these leads to develop lasting collaborations
  • creation of high quality user orientated information such as user-documents, training courses and web pages
  • publication of work where appropriate.

You will be expected to communicate effectively with a range of STFC staff and external partners. Occasional UK travel will be required to attend meetings, conferences and presentations (there is also the possibility of international travel).


About You:
We are looking for enthusiastic cheminformatics specialists who have the skills to develop informatics based solutions for industry challenges. As such we are looking for people with strong experience in this field.  The ideal candidate will have a positive “can do” attitude and a proven track record of delivering efficient solutions.  You will be self-motivated and able to work with a variety of partners on a number of projects simultaneously.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, along with effective presentational skills to deliver to technical and non-technical audiences.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • you should have demonstrable experience of applying cheminformatics techniques to real world programmes
  • proficient in one or more scripting or programming languages (e.g., python, R)
  • experience with storage and querying of chemical data
  • Physical Science Degree
  • MSC or PhD or equivalent experience (PhD will be required for higher banding).

Desirable:

  • good knowledge of working with version control software e.g., Github
  • good knowledge of NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB)
  • project management experience
  • experience of image processing
  • a background of working with toxicology or biodegradability data sources.

Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to defend the details of experience supplied in the application process
  • experience in writing effective documentation.

Desirable:

  • defensible knowledge of project management methodologies
  • good understanding of the fundamental details of any methods the candidates frequently use.
