About Us

At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), one of Europe’s largest research organisations, the expertise of our computing staff is key to making our research happen. We work with the very latest technologies to drive advances in both hardware and software that have genuine real world applications. Whether it is the search for the Higgs Boson and dark matter, analysing climate data or genomics, our systems tackle the biggest and most challenging problems in scientific computing.

STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) develops leading edge software and computer and data storage infrastructures, to support the work of world class science both within STFC and internationally.

About The Role

We now have a range of opportunities for talented software engineers who can focus on either Visualisation, Web Engineering, Data Systems or Distributed Systems. The roles will be based within the SCD Visual Analytics and Imaging Systems (VAIS) Group.

STFC is a delivery partner for the Data Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure (DAFNI), one of the three strands of UKCRIC, with an investment of £8M. DAFNI is led by the University of Oxford and is governed by eleven leading research universities and STFC.

The purpose of these roles will be to contribute to the DAFNI software platform design, engineering and piloting initiatives, to accommodate the migration of a large portfolio of existing DAFNI use cases and enable new ones on the platform.

As a full-stack software engineer, you will be involved in all phases of DAFNI construction, from software requirement gathering, design, implementation to validation. This project uses agile software development, testing and deployment methodologies to encourage agile response to change and request. It also uses a data-driven approach to evaluate and validate the entire software engineering processes from requirement, design, through to software development, testing and deployment and user and community engagement.

You will be required to support data/model hosting, migration and co-development activities. You will also be required to contribute to project events and conferences.

For the senior role you will also be required to manage and develop a small technical team and lead the development of at least one key section of the platform.

You must be available to travel within the UK and overseas as required.

About You

  • educated to a degree level in a relevant subject or be able to demonstrate significant relevant experience
  • a Masters or PhD in a related subject is desirable.
experience in a variety of software engineering processes and experience of modern programming languages, e.g. Python, Java, C++, C#.

Further experience or knowledge in any of the following will be beneficial:

  • data modelling, experience of using relational database, NoSQL or graph database
  • distributed or real-time processing, e.g. Hadoop, Spark, Dask
  • front end web development (HTML5, CSS, Javascript)
  • machine learning libraries, e.g. scikit-learn, Tensor Flow
  • developing enterprise scale RESTful web services
  • developing cloud-based applications in e.g. Amazon, Azure
  • automated testing, continuous integration (Jenkins, Travis or similar).

In order to be considered for a senior role, experience of contributing to a collaborative software development project and experience of managing a software development team is essential. You will also be skilled in technical communication and presentation of papers.

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages. (http://www.stfc.ac.uk/about-us/work-with-us/).
