Hartree Centre mission is to transform the competitiveness of UK industry by accelerating the adoption of High Performance Computing, Data Analytics and Cognitive Technologies. We collaborate with industry and research partners on projects that create insights and value by combining access to one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world dedicated to industrial engagement with our intense computing specialists.

The use and integration of big data and cognitive techniques in business is something, which is still in its infancy, and Hartree has an important role to play in leading research and application of these techniques in industry. The work of the Data Science Group involve creating new tools, prototypes and breakthroughs which will transform the competitiveness of UK industry by accelerating their adoption of data-centric computing, big data and cognitive technologies.
As part of this drive we are seeking young talent graduate to join the team. As the successful candidate you will be working on the real life projects and services with the latest computing architectures and technologies to fulfil the requirement of UK industries.

Summary of Key Duties

  • porting and optimization of parallel software for HPC environments
  • development and optimization of software for heterogeneous/accelerated architectures (GPU, Xeon Phi, FPGA, etc.)
  • learn and apply data centric, analytics and cognitive computing technologies
  • look at validation of conclusions, and presentation of results to customers (including advanced visualisation)
  • make site visits to commercial and academic partners
  • project management.

You will get to work in a range of teams and projects over the whole software development lifecycle from project inception to running high quality production services, using best practice tools, techniques and working practices. 

We use a large range of technologies and training is offered to ensure you have the right skills for the work. These include: Programming (e.g. C, C++, Python, Fortran), operating systems and virtualisation, High-performance computing libraries (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL) and many more.

Responsibilities

Within Hartree Centre, you will undertake four 6 month projects covering a wide range of activities providing real-life solutions which will be used beyond the end of the projects. You will work in a team and will be responsible for the technical development and outcomes of your project.

As you develop more skills and abilities, then the level of responsibility for delivery will increase.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

At least one of the desirables listed below. These may have been gained as part of a final year project.

  • programming experience, preferably in one or more of C, Fortran, C++ and Python, although other programming languages are acceptable
  • experience of Linux system management, clouds, PC/server hardware or networking
  • software engineering/development methods.

Plus at least one of the following:

  • using scientific computational software
  • understanding of IT security
  • managing a project
  • ability to communicate technical information to different audiences.

Shortlisting Criteria:

Essential:

  • obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2017 or be due to receive it in 2018
  • expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • the right to live and work in the UK 
  • degree in a mathematical, scientific, or computer science discipline
  • experience of data analysis, utilising a range of compiled and scripting languages
  • solid background in mathematics, understanding of statistical methods
  • experience of working as a member of project teams, preferably on software or cross-disciplinary projects
  • demonstrable ability to master new tools and technologies.

Desirable:

  • postgraduate degree qualification in mathematics, physics, engineering, life sciences or other equivalent relevant discipline with a data analysis component in the degree
  • good background in application of statistical methods
  • experience of big data problems, e.g. challenges of volume, variety, velocity and value
  • experience of big data processing solutions such as Hadoop Map-Reduce and Spark
  • experience of data visualisation (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI etc.)
  • experience of writing software with Python and/or R.Scientific programming in C, C++ or Fortran
  • knowledge of good coding practice and standards, including but not limited to:
    • continuous integration
    • test-driven development
    • reproducibility of results
    • software interoperability (workflow creation and optimisation)
    • experience developing interfaces and/or glue code.
