Purpose and scope

ISS is an internal IT department within UK SBS which provides multiple services to multiple Clients.  ISS is responsible for the support and maintenance of UK SBS line of business enterprise applications, as well as delivery and support of Business IT services to UK SBS and specific clients.

UK SBS has an integrated Grants system comprising a customised Oracle Siebel CRM, a bespoke .NET external transactional web system, E-Business and OBIEE with Oracle Fusion Middleware (FMW) providing the integration middleware.

The purpose of the Java Application Development Analyst is to work closely with the architects, application development managers and other members of the Development Team to provide expert technical analysis, support and software development, using Java.

You will liaise with suppliers and other UK SBS support teams to solve technical issues. The application development team encompasses a range of technologies and there is an expectation that you will expand your skills beyond Java.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is passionate about Java development and has a team mentality with a focus on delivering to the customer. You’ll work in a friendly, supportive environment that will allow you to develop your skill set and hone your abilities.

Key responsibilities and activities

  • develop work packages to a specified timescale, to agreed quality and to specified requirements
  • working as part of the Java team, you will support and improve established Java systems, whilst working on new system developments as required
  • you will liaise with customers and stakeholders to provide expert technical advice and guidance
  • create or input into designs and documentation related to system support and developments
  • occasionally represent the team in change management meetings
  • you will ensure that continuous improvement is a consideration in everything you do.

Experience and Qualifications


  • previous experience in a Java development role
  • experience of developing work packages to a specified timescale, to agreed quality and to specified requirements
  • desire to develop and learn new skills and be part of a diverse technical team
  • experience of using and developing web services
  • strong and demonstrable knowledge of Java development practices to design, build and maintain reusable and reliable code
  • knowledge and experience of XLST/XML/XPatch/JSON(Transformations)/SOAP/RESTful Web Services
  • hands-on experience with a range of frameworks (such as Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Hibernate, JSP/F, J2EE and Maven/Gradle)
  • experience with creating Build Scripts for Deployments using command-line tools (such as Apache Ant)
  • experience with testing frameworks (such as JUnit, Mockito, Powermock, JMock)
  • experience of CI methodologies (such a Jira or Maven)
  • working knowledge of Oracle SQL, PL/SQL.


  • experience of working in a technical support role, preferably with customer facing skills
  • an understanding of agile methodologies
  • experience of working with any of the following; AWS, Mule, Fuse, Apache, Camel, Oracle Bus (OSB) or WSO2
  • TDD/BDD experience.
