Overall Purpose:

Lead the transformation and delivery of NERC’s science services, facilities and data portfolio (which includes e-infrastructure and data strategy), plus large research infrastructure.

You will provide oversight for and leadership to NERC’s science facilities and data portfolio, including reporting, annual reviews and any relevant evaluations, drawing together skills and experience externally and across the Research and Innovation Directorate.

Primary

  • ensure that investments are monitored, evaluated and communicated to all relevant stakeholders
  • provide expert advice within and external to NERC: act as the NERC Head Office expert on issues relating to scientific data and information, open access and open science, science services and facilities. This includes working across Research Councils and representing NERC in Government and other data groups, as appropriate
  • work closely with the Head of National Capability Commissioning to deliver the entirety of the NC portfolio collectively
  • manage the relationship between NERC and the data centres and NERC Research Centres and act as NERC HO’s ‘intelligent customer’ for these services
  • provide oversight of relevant budgets and be accountable for financial planning commitment and spend
  • provide line management for Senior Programme Managers and team management for the Science Facilities and Data function.

Secondary

  • provide information and advice to the Associate Director of National Capability and Capital and the Director of Research and Innovation on relevant NERC investments. Where required provide information and advice to NERC Boards
  • contribute to the delivery of other NERC objectives, for example on communication and public engagement, as required.

Shortlisting & Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • graduate-level (or equivalent) knowledge and practical experience of leading portfolios including science services, facilities, data and/or HPC, etc.
  • experience of commissioning and delivery of science facilities, national capability and/or long term research
  • varied experience in managing internal and external stakeholders
  • experience in ensuring stability in newly formed processes
  • experience building strong customer-supplier relationships
  • experience managing budgets, resources and demonstrable commercial acumen
  • show clear leadership and team management skills and experience
  • have demonstrable senior level networking, communicating and influencing skills to be able to address the requirements of the role
  • be able to contribute at senior level to a wide range of issues and represent NERC.

Desirable:

  • graduate education in a related area of science
  • experience in optimising operations, including best practice and governance.

Our centrally located Swindon campus is shared with 7 other research councils and hosts approximately 1300 staff, which provides a pleasant, comfortable working environment.
