UK SBS delivers shared business services to BEIS and BEIS partner organisations including UKRI.  ISS is the UK SBS internal IT department which is responsible for managing UK SBS line of business enterprise systems, as well as delivering Business IT services directly to various Clients. 

The IT environments in use are heavily in demand, shared, resources which require strategic and operational oversight.  This role will provide that oversight for all IT environments, ranging from enterprise systems to infrastructure environments.  In this role you will work within a virtual team, alongside others with IT environment responsibilities, with the expectation of delivering and managing an holistic Environment Management strategy, roadmap and plan.  Operationally the role will focus on tracking and scheduling, whilst facilitating the resolution of conflicting demands in order to support development and testing across interconnected systems.  As such the role will require strong communication, stakeholder management and project management skills.

Environments Management

Strategy

  • establish and maintain a view of the environment as-is landscape
  • develop and maintain an environments strategy that meets organisational needs around cost and flexibility
  • develop and maintain a roadmap and plan demonstrating how and when the strategy will be realised
  • identify and pro-actively deliver continuous improvements for managing and delivering effective environments
  • act as a single point of contact for the overall development and test environment view. 

Operations

  • develop and maintain a rolling 12 month (or longer if necessary) environments schedule that includes usage, patching and refresh demands.  Ensure this is delivered in an inclusive manner through collaboration with key stakeholders
  • ensure the schedule and plans are of sufficient quality that they can easily facilitate agreements with key stakeholders for the scheduling of dedicated and shared environments
  • co-ordinate the delivery of the environment schedule
  • communicate test environment availability to project management and undertake quality assurance activities
  • resolve conflicts between teams competing for limited environments
  • forecast environment requirements base on anticipated future demands.

Stakeholder Management

  • identify key stakeholders and build effective relationships in order to deliver the environment schedule and formulate the future strategy
  • liaise regularly with stakeholders and maintain strong communications to deliver consistent, accurate information through a variety of channels
  • develop a virtual team and build effective relationships with colleagues, who also have environment ownership responsibilities, to ensure the effective management of environments
  • become a key stakeholder for the automation and test teams to help shape and prioritise activities which will underpin the delivery of the environment strategy.

Reporting and Dashboards

  • develop and maintain reports or dashboards detailing the schedule for non-production environments
  • agree and report on internal KPIs to track effectiveness of test environment delivery efforts
  • develop a dashboard for regular status reporting to ISS senior management and other key stakeholders.

Documentation

  • maintain a suite of documentation around environment management which includes:
    • policies
    • standard operating procedures
    • processes
    • strategies and plans
    • roles and responsibilities (RACI) for all involved in managing environments
  • ensure all documents are stored centrally and are controlled effectively.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • educated to at least GCE A level, SCE Higher grade or equivalent standard OR proven comparable work experience
  • knowledge and demonstrable understanding of ITIL framework
  • knowledge and demonstrable experience of Project Management methodologies or project manager experience
  • demonstrable understanding of stakeholder management
  • previous environment manager experience
  • proven experience of working in an IT environment

Desirable:

  • ITIL certification (minimum Foundation qualification v3)
  • waterfall (preferably PRINCE2) and/or Agile project management qualification
  • experience of working with Oracle ERP and associated systems
  • experience of working with Infrastructure technologies.

  • ability to identify key stakeholders, establish relationships and communicate effectively 
  • strong self-sufficiency and initiative whilst working to strict timescales
  • ability to work in a structured but flexible manner and in line with operating standards
  • ability to review and disseminate key information & produce documentation to a high standard
  • ability to cope with the demands of on-going support of high profile and complex systems.
