The STFC Digital Solutions group here at Daresbury (DL) are responsible for the delivery of IT support services across customer bases all over the UK. The work we do within the group is key to protecting the business assets of the organisation and is an enabler for the work of the scientific community here at STFC.

Our core services teams are based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and Daresbury and we work closely with teams across site as well as our shared service centre in Swindon.

STFC is currently undergoing a transformational change of its information and communications technology services. STFC’s investments in new digital capability, innovation and partnerships with industry specialists are globally significant for science and research.  The successful candidate will actively participate in delivering the departmental changes and will have a crucial part to play in the onward development of their role.

This is a hands on role, in a world class organisation, where you will be responsible for recording and resolving the IT queries of supported users. This will include supporting MS Windows and associated applications at the Daresbury (DL) site. You will work closely with other members of the STFC Digital Solutions (DS) team to ensure services are delivered efficiently and effectively and you will be key to enabling the organisation to successfully deliver it's core business of science. 

Role responsibilities

  • responsible for delivering 1st and 2nd line IT Support for all systems supported by the DS IT Service Desk
  • logging, analysing and responding to service requests and incidents within agreed service levels, including, direct rectification of problems and issues
  • follow best practices, incident management techniques and the proper deployment of tools for Service Desk Delivery
  • ensure that problem resolution is handled appropriately and escalated when a decision is required at a more senior level
  • participate where agreed, in projects that help develop the capability of the Service Desk and/or broaden your technical skill set
  • responsible for the specification, purchase and installation of IT hardware and software, including desktops, laptops, tablets, mobile devices, printers and MS Windows applications
  • advise users on the operation of systems and software and support the user provisioning process for new staff
  • liaise with internal and external stakeholders including suppliers, technical support teams and other departments
  • the role will be based at the DL office, however you will be expected to be able to work with staff in the other locations as the need arises
  • the role will require you to operate within a rota basis to ensure coverage to the business within agreed working hours. These are Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm
  • the rota times and schedule will need to be flexible to ensure appropriate levels of cover are provided.

  • educated to A Level or equivalent
  • quality of cover letter
  • ITIL Foundation or prepared to work towards it within 12 months
  • experience of working within a service desk function in an environment supporting business systems
  • the ability to demonstrate a range of technical skills, covering the support of networking, enterprise services and application support
  • experience of using the following products, technologies or environments;
    • Microsoft Operating Systems
    • Microsoft On Premise and Cloud Product Suite
    • Apple Operating System
    • laptop, desktop, tablet and hardware peripherals (configuration, support and deployment)
    • mobile phones (iOS & Android)
    • Active Directory
    • Microsoft Exchange
    • Service Management Tools.


  • ITIL Practitioner or Service Operation (SO)
  • Microsoft Support Qualifications
  • experience of working within the Public Sector
  • experience of using software deployment and configuration tools
  • video conferencing technologies and products
  • database administration (SQL Server)
  • experience of using Linux operating systems
  • Content Management Systems (e.g. Xibo)
  • knowledge of HTML
  • experience using backup and recovery technologies
  • knowledge of Information Security Principles
  • basic knowledge of networking technologies and support
  • experience using physical and virtual server environments.
