About Us

The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is currently seeking an experienced scientific computing professional to lead its scientific software development activities.

ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers, and on to fundamental studies of materials.

The Scientific Software Group develops, provides and supports scientific software to support the ISIS scientific programme, including reduction, analysis, modelling and data management. The group is responsible for the ISIS contribution to international collaboration to develop the Mantid reduction framework.

The recently created Ada Lovelace Centre is an integrated, cross-disciplinary computing/data science centre, for better exploitation of research carried out at our large scale National Facilities including the Diamond Light Source (DLS), the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility, the Central Laser Facility (CLF) and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). The successful applicant will be responsible for ISIS’s contribution to the Ada Lovelace Centre, and ensuring ALC delivers benefits to ISIS, including exploiting new opportunities in AI and machine learning.

Role responsibilities will include:

  • lead the Scientific Software Group managing the team, including several contractors
  • provide a vision and strategy for the scientific software required by ISIS
  • lead the ISIS contribution to the Ada Lovelace Centre

  • provide expertise and direction in software development in a multiplatform environment
  • contribute to software development as appropriate
  • manage the interaction with computing facilities used by ISIS
  • ensure staff are trained in appropriate technologies and packages.

Contacts and Communication

You will communicate with ISIS instrument scientists and users to understand the requirements for scientific software. You will work with instrumentation division head to manage the group. It is expected that you will be involved in relevant scientific software collaborations. You will be responsible for the relationship between ISIS and STFC’s Scientific Computing Department and ISIS’s contribution to the Ada Lovelace Centre.
