Overview of the role:

NERC CEH (Centre for Ecology & Hydrology) is currently seeking to expand its activities internationally, including in countries eligible for Official Development Assistance. To this end, we are seeking to recruit an International Development Opportunities Manager. This role will be based within CEH’s Business Development Team, located in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. The Team comprises three Business Development Managers, a Training Development Manager, an Innovation Manager and a Tender Support Team comprising three staff and a Head of Business Development. You will report to the Head of Business Development but will not have any line management responsibilities for other team members. You will also liaise closely with CEH Directors leading CEH’s existing international activity.

The main duties of the role will include:

  • to inform and contribute to an analysis of strategies and investment portfolios of international development funders, including charitable foundations, international institutions and relevant commercial organisations
  • work with CEH’s science board to identify priority international development funding propositions relevant to CEH’s research capabilities
  • develop business cases for large-scale, multi-annual external funding propositions for CEH science in international development, in concert with senior scientists
  • in concert with senior scientists, identify delivery partners and develop research and solution-oriented consortia focusing on specific business cases for international development interventions
  • develop an engagement plan for charitable foundations and other international development funding organisations and associated businesses, to promote and refine business cases for investment
  • enable CEH to promote the organisation’s international development capabilities in a cohesive and compelling manner
  • advise the CEH Tender Support Team and inform response to international development-orientated grant and tender calls
  • a requirement for overseas travel of varying frequency and duration.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • experience of scoping and delivering international development funded programmes, including charitable foundations and international institutions, either in a funder or practitioner context
  • a credible understanding of CEH’s research capabilities, within the context of international development
  • proven ability to develop robust and convincing business cases to promote novel investment programmes in the context of international development
  • a personal network of relevant stakeholders across Sub-Saharan Africa and/or DAC-list of ODA recipient countries beyond
  • ideally experienced in hydrology, hydrological extremes (floods and droughts) or Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH; SDG 6)
  • consideration will be given if you have a non-water related background but which otherwise strongly match the key skills and qualifications and are able to apply these to CEH capabilities
  • a capable communicator, able to engage with a range of stakeholders across academia and third, public and private sectors
  • excellent project management skills, able to engage and motivate staff to engage in new international development activity
  • a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
