RAL Space is involved in all aspects of the design, manufacture, assembly and test of hardware and software for space-based and ground-based scientific instruments. An important part of this work is the Product Assurance function, provided by the RAL Space Product Assurance Group from which Product Assurance Managers are assigned to each of the projects in the department.

The RAL Space Product Assurance Group is looking to appoint one or more Senior Product Assurance Specialists (Band E); appointment as a Product Assurance Specialist (Band D) may be offered to suitable candidates who do not meet all the criteria for the more senior role.

A Senior Product Assurance Specialist would be expected to act as Product Assurance Manager for a portfolio of projects. The role includes responsibility for writing the Product Assurance Plan then ensuring that the activities it prescribes are followed to provide appropriate control and records of materials and processes, dependability, safety, EEE components, and for quality assurance measures including supporting and auditing suppliers. The PA Manager is the formal point of contact with the customers and suppliers on all Product Assurance matters.

You must be capable of thorough and conscientious work to tight deadlines across multiple projects simultaneously, adapting to changing priorities as the need arises.  In managing product assurance issues there is frequently the need to negotiate the best course of action, so effective oral and written communication skills are essential when dealing with Managers, Engineers and Scientists both within RAL Space and with representatives of space agencies, customers and suppliers.  Through education, training or experience you should have a secure understanding of some engineering discipline – mechanical, thermal, optical, electronics or software – with knowledge and experience of space applications being highly advantageous.

There may be some need for travel on an ad-hoc basis, occasionally with overnight stays and possession of a full UK driving license is desirable
