You will work within the JULES team, which supports and enables collaborative work across the research and academic community to address important science questions in the fields of hydrology, land-atmosphere feedbacks, carbon and nutrient cycles, data science and integration with novel instrumentation and Earth Observation Technologies. You will also work closely with the Met Office and universities to support the UK-wide academic community in the use of the JULES model.

In this role you will be a technical expert within the JULES community, developing and supporting the infrastructure needed to provide the code, configurations and documentation to users.

You will work closely with the scientists who are using and developing the JULES model. Specifically you will:

  • develop systems to support the development and provision of model configurations across model release cycles
  • provide technical development of evaluation and benchmarking tools and ensure these are integrated into standard workflows, as part of ongoing international activities
  • provide technical support for the use of JULES by the academic community, particularly on supported platforms such as JASMIN and other HPC
  • develop online documentation of all aspects of the modelling system
  • develop and maintain content on the JULES website
  • contribute to the development and delivery of training.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria

Essential

  • a PhD or skills and knowledge to a PhD level
  • proven skills in the development of scientific software, as shown by successful delivery of new software for personal or community use
  • proven skills in scripting in high-level languages (e.g. Python, Bash)
  • a track record of producing high-quality work of the highest standards and to tight deadlines
  • an aptitude for and experience of working in an interdisciplinary research team; excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • able to take a lead in proposing and implementing technical developments
  • knowledge of high-performance computing platforms.

Desirable

  • degree (at least 2.1) in a relevant subject
  • knowledge of environmental modelling, application and evaluation
  • skills in developing high quality documentation
  • skills in developing and delivering training.
