Purpose of role:

To support the Group Engagement Manager in delivering the group engagement and internal communication elements of the MRC's Communication and Engagement Strategy (available via the MRC website). In particular, 'to increase staff engagement, productivity and advocacy by promoting and supporting a culture of dialogue across the MRC.'

Working relationships:

  • work closely with the Group Engagement Manager to deliver communications initiatives aimed at the MRC community
  • develop effective working relationships across Head Office directorates and with communications leads in MRC research establishments across the UK and in Africa.

Main duties:

Publications (25%):

  • with the Group Engagement Manager, collate and edit content for the monthly MRC internal newsletter, MRC Life, and coordinate distribution.

Intranet (25%):

  • working with the Group Engagement Manager and the Digital and Editorial Team, maintain the corporate intranet to a high standard
  • take responsibility for updating specific pages e.g. the news carousel
  • via regular contact with page owners and devolved publishers, ensure head office colleagues update their sections and do so to an acceptable standard.

Events (40%):

  • lead on the coordination of a series of town hall-style meetings across head office, other MRC establishments and universities (working to a strategy provided by the Group Engagement Manager)
  • provide administrative support as required in support of the MRC Biannual Leaders’ Conferences and the annual MRC Max Perutz Science Writing Award competition (i.e. support for the judging process and the event). Both events are in central London
  • provide support for other corporate events as required, including the distribution of events materials.

Other (10%):

  • provide administrative and practical support for MRC group engagement and communication projects as required. Note: occasional travel to London will be required.

Education/qualifications:

Essential:

  • educated to degree level or have equivalent relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • a Communications related degree.

Previous experience required:

Essential:

  • able to work to deadlines
  • highly proficient with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Desirable:

  • events management experience
  • experience of editing a newsletter or magazine
  • experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • project management experience
  • experience of working in a public section environment
  • experience of working with and achieving results through a range of stakeholders
  • experience of proof-reading documents.

Communication skills:

Essential:

  • excellent writing and editing skills
  • the ability to turn complex or technical information into clear information for a range of audiences
  • keen interest in the application of digital media for corporate communication.

Qualities:

Essential:

  • able to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, including good diplomacy skills
  • able to behave with discretion and with strict attention to confidentiality
  • excellent attention to detail and a keen eye for accuracy
  • highly organised, customer focused and committed to continuous improvement
  • able to organise, prioritise and manage several tasks at one time in order to meet deadlines.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
