The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides leading-edge computer and data storage infrastructure to support the work of world class science both within STFC, the UK and internationally.

The Data Services Group, within SCD, provides data storage and database services for the high volumes of scientific data produced by large scale facilities including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project at CERN (http://gridpp.ac.uk/) and the Diamond Light Source synchrotron in the UK (www.diamond.ac.uk). 
We have a vacancy for a highly motivated individual to join the Database Services Team.

You will be able to demonstrate good communication skills, good organisational skills and an analytical approach to problem solving.  You will need to provide a share of on call support and undertake some travel in the UK and overseas, e.g. to CERN.

Additional training and certification opportunities are also offered.

The post is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities:

  • install and configure databases – MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle, Postgres
  • diagnose database performance problems
  • create database upgrade plans from development through to testing and deployment
  • create baseline/benchmarks of database performance
  • deploy database application updates to production systems
  • evaluating requirements, developing, testing and integrating applications with new/existing database systems
  • support ElasticSearch services within the department including the integration with elastic stack tools, e.g. Telegraf, Grafana
  • create and manage project plans for systems deployment, database installations/migration.

Contacts and Communication:

  • interact with the other members of the Database, Data Storage and Grid Services teams on a daily basis
  • routinely interact with other staff supporting the GridPP Tier-1 and STFC Facilities services
  • liaise with end users when appropriate.

Essential:

  • knowledge of current database management systems, e.g. MySQL/MariaDB, Postgres, Oracle etc
  • experience with database management operations, e.g. running queries, installation, backup/restore, monitoring, performance tuning etc
  • experience with Linux
  • good communication skills.

Desirable:

At least two of the following:

  • experience managing services in a production environment
  • knowledge of SQL tuning
  • experience of shell scripting and/or another programming language, e.g. Python, C, Java
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • degree in a scientific, mathematical or IT related discipline.

Interview Criteria

Special Requirements:

  • must be able to take a reasonable share of the team’s on-call (24/7 support) responsibilities
  • must be able to travel within the UK and abroad, e.g. to CERN, up to 3 times per year for 1-3 days and 1-2 per year for 4-5 days.

Desirable:

At least two of the following:

  • experience managing services in a production environment
  • knowledge of SQL tuning
  • experience of shell scripting and/or another programming language, e.g. Python, C, Java
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • degree in a scientific, mathematical or IT related discipline.
