Job Purpose:

As part of the British Geological Survey (BGS) senior leadership Science Strategy Group, you will be responsible for the leadership of the BGS digital data and data technology strategies, ensuring organisational evolution and efficient and effective exploitation of BGS digital assets to create science and business value.  This involves accountability for the development of a robust, coherent digital data and information technology strategy, ensuring that we leverage the latest technology, data and analytics capabilities to achieve our overall business and science objectives, as well as building strong connections with external data communities to position BGS as an outward looking digital organisation.

Key Duties:

  • advise the CEO, Executive and BGS Board on the future digital strategies required to underpin the delivery of the BGS science and business objectives, creating a vision for the BGS digital strategy through the effective use of big data systems/tools, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and near-real time dynamic visualisations and delivery, enabling data innovation to support BGS as a global leader of geoscience
  • lead the development and delivery of insight from geoscience data and leverage Information Technology advances. To include using innovative, robust statistical and analytical techniques e.g. natural language processing, data mining, machine learning, semantic web/ontologies, building data pipelines as well as a variety of system architectures as appropriate. Enabling digital innovation to support BGS as a global leader of geoscience
  • as a member of the Science Strategy Group work closely with the Chief Scientists to develop a coherent vision and strategy for the role of digital transformation in delivering the BGS science strategy, including developing the skills of BGS staff to maximise the uptake of emerging digital technologies including artificial intelligence, data mining, the use of digital ledgers and machine learning, ensuring the proactive development of future capability
  • work with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to maintain and develop digital infrastructure across the organisation, and to support revenue generation through the optimisation of outward facing commercial data platforms and products
  • lead the definition and delivery of the BGS digital transformation which will drive a digital culture across all of BGS, bringing data technology teams together with the geoscience units to build a digital workplace to drive efficiencies and implement improvements to advance big data management and analytics, delivering a step change in the use of digital technology across BGS
  • co-ordinate BGS’s relationships with key partners/collaborations and other stakeholders across the geoscience digital data community, including effective engagement with the Geospatial Commission, NERC-UKRI data teams, the European and International geodata initiatives
  • lead in building a network of external partnerships to drive the research into emerging relevant digital technologies to enable the increased application of data-driven science in BGS and the broader geosciences
  • horizon-scan, identifying opportunities to increase access to and use of geoscience data and digital technologies to ensure BGS’s leading role in the future
  • represent BGS at key UK digital data forums and global digital technology events, build relationships with key stakeholders/partners, gather intelligence and keep up-to-date with the pace of change in the digital sector to ensure existing and future BGS digital strategies remain relevant
  • identify new revenue generation opportunities through digital technological transformation, driving the innovative design and delivery of digital products and services and designing next generation systems
  • act as a role model in relation to BGS’s values and its commitment to equality, diversity and the creation of an inclusive working environment, ensuring that these values and principles are clearly reflected in the BGS digital strategy.

The appointee will be an experienced leader with a track record in delivering outstanding data and technology services and continually seeking opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in this field.

A detailed skills specification is available on our job-site; however, when considering your application, the recruitment panel will specifically be looking for evidence of the following priority skills and experience:

• A relevant degree in IT / Computer science (or equivalent senior level experience in a data science role); ideally, the successful candidate will also have a PhD  or MSc in Data Science / a relevant computing discipline, but this is not essential
• A successful track record of senior management experience of at least 10 years duration in a data and technology environment.
• A strategic knowledge of cloud technologies and user experience issues relating to digital services.
• An ability, evidenced through example, to handle complex multidimensional problems
• An ability, evidenced by example,  to lead and develop strategic collaborations and to manage relationships with diverse stakeholders
• An enthusiasm for the role and the work of the BGS; a passion for data and a desire to innovate and continually improve data technologies


Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks. A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays. The role also attracts an annual opportunity to receive a discretionary non consolidated bonus and relocation assistance is also available.
