Background

The purpose of this post is to provide PC support in the RAL Space Department IT Support team. The department has approximately 450 PCs and laptops, linked to Microsoft 2012/2016 servers providing various Microsoft Back-Office services, including: File services, Anti-Virus, Terminal Services, and Microsoft System Centre Configuration Manager. These computers run a mixture of Windows 7/10 and Mac OSX. The supported applications vary considerably depending on the computers role, but range from the Microsoft Office suite through to industry CAD packages.

Your responsibilities will be to provide front line support to staff within RAL Space. You will report to the head of the helpdesk section. A key measure of the success will be customer satisfaction.

List of Duties/Work Program/Responsibilities:

  • installing and configuring computer hardware operating systems and applications
  • troubleshooting and resolving system and network problems
  • talking staff or clients through a series of actions - either face to face or over the telephone - to help resolve issues
  • maintaining procedural documentation and relevant reports
  • testing and evaluating new technology
  • establishing a good working relationship with RAL Space staff and other professionals within STFC.

Contacts and Communication

Internally, you will be expected to communicate with RAL Space staff and visitors, along with IT support staff on other helpdesks within STFC. You will work closely with other support staff in a small team.

Externally, you will need to liaise with suppliers and any companies providing maintenance contracts for hardware and software used within RAL Space.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • A-Levels or equivalent, in a relevant subject
  • a demonstrable interest in all areas of computing.

Desirable:

  • experience of supporting Windows 7/10
  • experience of supporting Office 2010-2016 products
  • experience of providing front-line computer support
  • experience of Apple Mac OSX.

Interview Criteria

Desirable:

  • demonstrate a pro-active, thoughtful approach to improving existing computing systems
  • a desire to further their knowledge of PC hardware and software, possibly leading to MCSA qualifications.
