UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a new, independent, non-departmental public body created in April 2018 with government investment in research and innovation of over £6bn per annum.  We are a new unified voice bringing together nine executive council partners (the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK, and Research England) with a shared vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation. UKRI also provides coordinated strategic advice to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on the balance of funding between research disciplines.

As an Assistant Accountant, you’ll be within the Financial Control pillar of UKRI Corporate Finance. The Financial Control pillar within UKRI is principally responsible for (but not limited to) Financial Accounting, Cash Management, Transaction Processing, and Finance Processes

You’ll be part of a team responsible for monthly General Ledger analysis, monitoring cash flow, preparing and posting journals, preparation/review of monthly reconciliation packs both prepared by our shared services centre and those within the Financial Control team and providing feedback to Financial Control Managers, Business Partners and Management Reporting team to ensure our financial information is robust, accurate and timely.


  • to be part of a team responsible for the review of the monthly reconciliation packs provided via the Cadency on-line reconciliation system prepared by UKSBS Ltd our shared services provider
  • to be part of a team responsible the reconciliation of accounts not reconciled by UKSBS on a monthly basis
  • to be part of a team responsible monthly General Ledger analysis and provide feedback to Financial Control Manager and Management Reporting team
  • to be part of a team responsible for the Goods Received Note (GRNI) and Purchase Order (PO) process including providing training in the correct usage of iProcurement and GRNI to new employees
  • to act as one of the Accounts Payable contacts within FC team to assist in reviewing daily and monthly on hold reports produced by UKSBS, and instigating appropriate actions to resolve issues relating to invoices on hold.
  • to be part of a team responsible for cash flow issues relating to invoices payable and any other cash flow issues
  • to be part of a team responsible for preparing, reviewing and posting journals for the Finance Control team
  • to be part of a team responsible for the review and process of non-employee expenses.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • proven team working skills, able to communicate at all levels and present clear and concise financial information
  • good working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • ability to manage and prioritise a large workload in order to meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
  • good attention to detail
  • positive work ethic with the confidence to engage effectively
  • excellent interpersonal skills, including tact and discretion
  • experience of working with Oracle or other accounts packages.



  • Level 3 AAT qualification or be a part qualified accountant or demonstrate strong experience in a Finance department.

Interview Criteria


  • good working knowledge of basic accounting functions and general ledger work
  • good working knowledge of Finance systems
  • strong IT and database skills, including managing/analysing data, reporting, documenting and maintaining processes and controls and data integrity
  • team working skills and good communication
  • ability to manage and prioritise a large workload in order to meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
