As part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the Hartree Centre is the UKs foremost HPC and data analytics technology centre. The Project Support Officer will be a member of the Programme Management Office (PMO) within the Hartree Centre, reporting to one of the Programme Managers. You are expected to work within the standards of the Hartree PMO and follow standard project management practices within Hartree and STFC.

The role will primarily work alongside the Programme Managers and assist them with managing a diverse portfolio of internal and external projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • collect data on project status and outlook for a portfolio of projects, prepare and provide summary reports, and provide assistance to the Programme Managers as required
  • liaise with the business development team to assist with the initiation of new projects
  • act as the single point of contact and Hartree representative for individual projects, fostering the relationship with Hartree partners and clients, and ensure a professional service is delivered
  • monitor each project resource usage (systems, staff, and money) through the Programme Management Office and produce relevant reports
  • develop and manage the individual project plans with the appropriate stakeholders
  • monitor and control all project documentation ensuring it is current and accessible
  • monitor technologists’ priorities and the resources allocated to the project, escalating to the  relevant Programme Manager as needed
  • contribute to the continued growth and development of the PMO operational processes by maintaining their own continual professional development and adhering to industry best practices as well as providing advice and guidance on relevant standards
  • raise both standard and non-catalogue procurement requisitions as required by the project
  • apply a proactive approach to complex problem solving.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in a numerate/scientific/engineering discipline
  • excellent written communication skills
  • excellent organisational and numeracy skills.


  • qualification in project management (e.g. Prince2 or APM).

  • high levels of drive, determination, ownership and responsibility

  • awareness of science and engineering and their use of HPC.
