The Science and Technology Facilities Council brings strategic leadership to UK investments in large national and international research facilities, together with delivering world class science and technology. The Council operates some of the world’s most advanced facilities, such as ISIS.

ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3,000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers and on to fundamental studies of materials.

A vacancy exists for a Mechanical Support Technician in the ISIS Ancillary Plant Section, which is part of the ISIS Accelerator Division, to provide support for much of the equipment associated with the smooth running of ISIS. The section is looking to recruit a practical mechanical technician who has served a fully recognised apprenticeship or is similarly qualified. The plant includes large evaporative and air blast cooler systems, water treatment plant, de-mineralised and de-oxygenated water production systems, ventilation fans and motors, chilled water systems, air conditioning units and compressed air systems.

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities

You will report to the Ancillary Plant Maintenance Manager within the Accelerator Engineering Group and should have:

  • experience of ancillary plant systems
  • a sound understanding of Mechanical Engineering workshop practices
  • a recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent
  • experience of installing pipe work
  • refrigeration plant experience
  • the maintenance of complex ancillary plant systems both planned and reactive
  • good interpersonal skills, well-motivated and able to motivate others
  • the ability to work to fixed schedules.

An On Call allowance may be available for those who wish to take up this option.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (or equivalent experience)
  • experience of ancillary plant systems
  • experience of installing pipe work
  • able to operate a variety of hand tools.


  • City and Guilds, NVQ or BTEC qualifications or equivalent of ONC standard minimum
  • ability to work as part of team and/or unsupervised.
  • refrigeration experience

Interview Criteria


  • Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship (or equivalent experience)
  • a degree of skill/experience in mechanical fitting and pipe fitting
  • ability to fault-find and resolve technical problems
  • working knowledge of safety issues and current H&S legislation
  • work on own initiative and be proactive.


  • ONC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • computer skills/working knowledge of MS Office products
  • refrigeration experience
  • experience on ancillary plant systems in a large facility
  • experience in welding techniques.
