Background

UK Collaborative on Development Research (UKCDR) is a collaborative of government and research funders with interests in international development. Since 2008, it has worked to make the UK, which is one of the most productive, innovative and high-quality research countries in the world, also a world leader in collaboration for the use of research and innovation to achieve sustainable development.

UKCDR exists to connect and build expertise among its membership and to build connections between the research and development communities. By ensuring better coherence and collaboration, it allows funders to act in complementary ways or in partnership, and avoiding risks of fragmentation, duplication and missed opportunities. By fact-finding, analysing and distilling information, and bringing together the expertise of its members and stakeholders in a neutral space, it enables links and partnerships and facilitates best practice and stronger strategic decision making. This ensures the best science is funded and used to benefit international development, as well as the UK.

UKCDR’s core contributing members include The Department for International Development (DFID), Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Welcome Trust.

UKCDR is governed by a newly formed Board, the HMG Strategic Coherence for ODA-funded Research (SCOR) Board. The SCOR Board is chaired by an independent member, Professor Peter Piot, brings together the Chief Scientific Advisers and Directors of our Core members and engages strategically with HMG Treasury.

In June 2018, UKCDR launched a new strategy building on firm foundations laid since its establishment in 2008, and aligning to the 2015 UK aid strategy and the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. It comprises four integrated overlapping aims:

  • mapping analysis and foresight
  • convening for collaboration and joint action
  • sharing information, learning and best practice
  • a collective voice to shape policy.

UKCDR is reviewed annually by its members. UKCDR is hosted by the Welcome Trust in London, with HR support provided by UKRI (which directly employs UKCDR staff). The current team comprises 9 staff, including the Executive Director, an Executive Assistant, the Head of Operations, a Communications Manager and 5 Research and Policy Officers. 

About the role

As a member of the UKCDR Team, you will work closely with the Executive Director and across the UKCDR team to provide additional leadership and critical oversight for the portfolio of work within UKCDR and to support stakeholder engagement. You will also keep abreast of trends and developments in international development research and provide research and policy advice to member organisations and stakeholders. Finally, the you will support staff development and learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • provide leadership and critical oversight for the portfolio of work within UKCDR
  • lead on strategic project work for projects across UKCDR - from project plan development, to the management of the project, to delivery against project objectives
  • be accountable for overall project success and ensure appropriate oversight of time, cost and quality, management of risks and issues and sign-off of deliverables
  • guide project teams on methodology and provide subject matter expertise
  • act as point of contact for senior stakeholders and drive proactive stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle
  • carry out high-quality research and analysis as required
  • lead on the writing of reports and other deliverables, including the preparation of papers for meetings of the UKCDR Officials Group and SCOR Board Meetings
  • act as a subject matter expert on international development research
  • keep abreast of key trends and developments in international development research
  • act as an ambassador for UKCDR by participating as a speaker or panellist in key research meetings, policy and public engagement forums and by providing research and policy advice to member organisations as required
  • under direction of Executive Director, take on new assignments, work independently on research issues and questions, interface with UKCDR wider stakeholders and provide follows ups
  • support stakeholder engagement and relationship building

You will also be expected to undertake any other work that may be reasonable required from time to time, including leading or supporting internal initiatives.

Shortlisting criteria

Essential

  • advanced degree (or equivalent experience) in a STEM, social science, or public health subject
  • substantial experience in a role relevant to international development research
  • experience of quantitative and qualitative research and analysis in an academic, commercial or governmental environment
  • experience of successfully delivering high-profile, high-quality projects
  • ability to influence others and build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders
  • excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).

Desirable

  • working knowledge of statistical methods and analytical tools.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
