Purpose of the role

The Digital Services team are part of the Digital Data & Technology (DD&T) directorate of UKRI Corporate services.  The team is responsible for building, delivering and iterating the digital services used by UKRI in pursuit of their organisational goals.  DD&T is a key enabler of a major transformation programme within UKRI where 9 councils are transforming to represent one large organisation responsible for driving research and innovation across the UK economy.  Digital services are core to providing a modern and enabling interface between UKRI and its stakeholders.

As a Solution Architect you will review, interpret and respond to detailed business requirements, ensuring that the systems or services to which you are assigned can technically deliver business needs.  You will provide input into the agreed UKRI enterprise architecture and ensure that your solutions  are aligned and compliant.  You will oversee the design, development, testing and implementation of technical solutions and report on delivery commitments to ensure solutions are implemented as expected and to agreed timeframes.

Key areas of accountability:

  • you will be accountable for the technical and solution architecture of the systems or solutions to which you are assigned including any interdependencies with other organisational systems such as the data warehouse, finance systems, and integrations with other business solutions
  • you will lead technical solution on your assigned project team working closely with the Product Manager and Delivery Manager advising on all solution/technical aspects of the project to ensure any issues are uncovered and resolved quickly
  • you will work closely alongside technical development teams to ensure that they are implementing solutions in keeping with your design
  • you will attend the daily stand up ceremonies as a way of keeping open lines of communication with the development team members
  • you will own the Solution Architecture overview documentation for your service/solution and be responsible for keeping it up to date throughout its lifecycle and attending the UKRI with any changes as necessary
  • you will be responsible for approving any changes to the technical design and will present these to the Funding Service Technical Steering Group for ratification and the Technical Design Authority as necessary
  • you will be capable of presenting and explaining technical solutions in a non technical way to stakeholders.

Essential skills, qualifications and experience


  • educated to Degree-level or equivalent.


  • defining requirements based upon user needs, ideally as user stories
  • identifying opportunities for service and business improvement, pinpointing opportunities to allow organisations like UKRI to perform more effectively
  • writing business cases justifying investment in digital spend, ideally having participated in a GDS spend approval process
  • specifying requirements from both a business and user perspective to enable agreed changes to be implemented effectively
  • identifying, analysing and managing relationships with and between stakeholders. You will  communicate with stakeholders clearly and regularly, clarifying mutual needs and commitments through consultation and consideration of impacts whilst focusing on user needs.

Skills: You will:

  • be familiar with modern component-based architectures and able to design solutions which use these to deliver solutions which meet user needs
  • be innovative and able to apply this to your own work
  • be aware of and understand agile methodology and how to apply the agile mindset to all aspects of your work
  • have the ability to work in a fast paced, evolving environment and utilises an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid delivery
  • be unafraid to take risks, willing to learn from mistakes and appreciates the importance of agile project delivery for digital projects in government
  • be able to ensure the team has a situational awareness of what each other is working on and how this relates to practical objectives and user needs
  • be capable of investigating, analysing and solving complex problems and concepts and make disciplined decisions based on available information
    apply thinking, gathering and analysing information using comprehensive tools and techniques, using data to formulate both short term day-to-day and longer term strategic plans, and identifying and analysing options to assess feasibility and operational impact
  • ensure that the business solution aligns with the vision, mission, objectives, strategy and the business and user needs and can identify and recognise a viable solution or control.

Technical Skills: You will ideally:

  • be familiar with designing and delivering large enterprise systems using an Agile methodology  across multiple teams and sprints
  • be knowledgeable of designing and running enterprise systems in the public cloud, specifically AWS offerings and the architectural patterns and technical considerations in utilising public cloud platforms, services and capabilities
  • be familiar with Dev/Ops best practices, tools sets, continuous build and deployment, automated testing etc. and the impact on the architecture
  • have knowledge of packaged enterprise solutions, extending them and interfacing with them, ideally – Salesforce. Workday, Oracle E-Business Suite being a bonus
  • have architectural technical knowledge of database platforms such as  MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, Redshift, Aurora etc
  • have good awareness of integration platforms such as ETL, enterprise service bus, message hubs and brokers, API gateways
  • have familiarity with designing solutions using a modern Java based architecture – Java, Javascript, React, Graphql etc
  • be skilled in designing modular, event based, micro services based architectures that can evolve and adapt
  • familiar with all security and privacy considerations – well architected Cloud solutions, Cyber, threats, GDPR etc.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
