Purpose of the role

To take a key role in the support and development of UKRI network systems. Working with the wider UKRI network support team to maintain efficient, reliable & secure networks across UKRI constituent organisations.

The network landscape within UKRI is currently undergoing substantial change, with the introduction of a new multi-tenant network (MTN) architecture across core UKRI sites. This will involve a core network and a number of clientsor networks to satisfy specific requirements of constituent parts of UKRI. As UKRI moves towards a more cloud-based infrastructure, integrity and performance of networks is becoming of prime importance.

You will have responsibility (in conjunction with delivery partners) for overseeing the introduction and smooth running of a multi-tenant network, currently being implemented in core UKRI sites. Liaising with research council stakeholders, you will also be the primary point of contact for tenant network support.

Key Areas of Accountability

Leadership/team work

  • be the primary technical expert within UKRI for the multi-tenant network & ensure that the wider support team is fully conversant with the architecture
  • take ownership of the multi-tenant network from a UKRI perspective
  • be the primary technical contact with MTN delivery partners
  • work with the wider UKRI network and LiveOps teams to ensure effective operation of the wider UKRI network infrastructure
  • work with minimal supervision.


  • ensure that appropriate change management processes are followed for network changes
  • assist the front-line support teams in problem management where this pertains to network issues
  • lead the implementation and troubleshooting of the MTN (both wired and wireless)
  • work with the wider team as required on implementation, upgrade and support of network and security systems across the UKRI estate, including research centres and institutes as appropriate
  • ensure that performance of network systems is effectively monitored
  • management & support of UKRI WAN & LAN Infrastructure across multiple sites and Centres, inter-site VPNs, firewalls, security monitoring systems & DNS.


  • ensure that UKRI network configuration documentation is maintained and made available to the wider technical teams.

Shortlisting Criteria:

  • in depth knowledge networking protocols
  • demonstrable experience of configuration and support of network devices in both wired and wireless environments – experience with Cisco devices essential
  • experience with any of the following technologies an advantage: Fortigate, Checkpoint, Juniper, Clearpass
  • knowledge and experience of firewall configuration and management
  • experience of service delivery in a customer-focused environment
  • experience of working on projects and delivering to set timescales

  • excellent problem-solving abilities
  • ability to work independently and lead in work areas whilst also contributing to the wider team
  • willingness to adapt to a changing environment
  • good communication skills.
UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research.
