The ASTeC Radio frequency (RF) and cryogenics group is responsible design, development and commissioning of cutting edge radio frequency systems for use in particle accelerators.

RF systems are the power sources which provide the acceleration to charged particles within accelerators. These systems include low power signal generation and control, amplification up to high power, transport from the amplifiers to accelerating structures, and the accelerating structures themselves.

Our work ranges from building state of the art FPGA based feedback systems, to commissioning high power amplifiers operating at up to 80 Megawatts of peak power, to electromagnetic modelling of accelerating structures.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for development, commissioning and operation of high power radio frequency systems for the various particle accelerator projects, such as CLARA, being undertaken by ASTeC. You will work with a small team including electrical / mechanical designers and external contractors to continuously develop and improve these high power RF amplification and transport systems.
  • This may involve everything from basic conceptual design studies, detailed design, computer simulations and implementation of solutions.
  • You will be expected to work closely your RF group team members plus other scientific and engineering groups as part of a wider team. This will often involve working with external groups from both industry and other world leading research organisations.
  • A key part of the role is willingness to travel both within the UK and internationally, and you will be expected to effectively present your technical work, and communicate with diverse audiences. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Most importantly, we are seeking a high quality graduate who has a passion and genuine enthusiasm for working in a research environment, with a good basic understanding of what we do, and why we do it.

Criteria to be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I)


  • Obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2018, 2019 or be due to receive it in 2020 (S)
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above (S&I)
  • The right to live and work in the UK (S)
  • Can demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills (S&I)
  • Effective team working skills (I)
  • Can demonstrate relevant broad engineering knowledge (I)
  • Can demonstrate appreciation and understanding of basic principles involved in RF Engineering. (I)


  • Able to demonstrate an interest in radio frequency engineering (S&I)
  • Practical skills such as workshop or laboratory experience (S&I)
  • Computer programming skills (I)
  • Basic knowledge of how thermionic RF amplifier tubes work (I)
  • Knowledge of project management principles (I).

Current starting salary of £26,932, plus annual incremental increase, a £1,000 welcome bonus and a £2,000 salary increase after the first year.

Subject to performance you will be promoted after two years with us, resulting in a further salary increase.
