Sample Environment support for the ISIS Science Program includes the provision of high-temperature furnaces and a range of high pressure and gas handling systems. The ISIS Experimental Operations Division needs to recruit a support technician at Band C/D level to provide technical support to visiting scientist to ISIS, conducting the supply and maintenance of sample environment equipment.  

List of Duties/Work Program/Responsibilities

  • Off-line preparation, maintenance and testing of furnaces and high pressure sample environment equipment
  • Installation and commissioning of sample environment equipment on neutron and muon instruments
  • In-situ fault-finding and efficient provision of solutions
  • Work as part of a team
  • Help develop sample environment equipment for future demands
  • Comprehensive experimental support, including round the clock trouble shooting/fault finding and repair of equipment. Providing on-call cover during user program
  • The ISIS facility runs five continuous 5 week long cycles each year so a flexible approach to working will be essential to meet our support role requirements (paid overtime and on-call duties may be required)
  • Liaison with in house and visiting scientists and engineers on experimental requirements and the provision of solutions to their experimental needs.

Contacts and Communication

You will be required to talk with a high level of mechanical knowledge to assist in the delivery of sample environment equipment for experiments at ISIS, with the pressure and furnace section members as well as beam line scientists and visiting scientists.

Personal Skills and Attributes

You will have a rounded practical mechanical engineering background. A good knowledge of the properties of materials is also essential. Some Knowledge and experience of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and safety requirements associated with them as well as vacuum systems and techniques would be desirable.

Shortlisting Criteria (S) Interview Criteria (I) or both (S&I):

  • ONC or equivalent in a relevant subject (S)
  • Mechanical Apprenticeship (S)
  • Practical knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering practices including the ability to work from engineering drawings (S&I)        
  • Computer literate, working knowledge of Microsoft office (S)
  • Must be able to display good communication skills (S&I)
  • Able to interact with others and work within a team (S&I)
  • Ability to express technical detail (S&I)
  • Calmness under pressure (I)
  • ISIS is a multileveled facility, candidate must be able to negotiate all areas (I)
  • Prepared to work overtime including weekends and participate in out of hours on-call scheme (S&I)
  • Prepared to work in a radiation area (I).

The Band C role would meet the above criteria and show some knowledge of the below criteria with a willingness to learn new skills where required.
The Band D role would meet the above criteria and require extensive experience in the below criteria, as well as experience of managing technical staff.

  • HNC or equivalent in a relevant subject (S)
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory cryogenics, pressure or vacuum (S&I)
  • Practical experience in the use and support of pressure or vacuum equipment and or experimental instrumentation (S&I)
  • Knowledge of cryogenic liquids, gases and high vacuum technology (S&I)
  • Demonstrate initiative and analytical skills (S&I)
  • Candidate must be proactive (S&I)
  • Resourceful able to work under own initiative (S&I)
  • Must understand the principle of continuous improvement (S&I)
  • Current driving licence (S).
