Salary: £24,777- £28,932 per annum (dependent upon qualifications, experience and inclusive of allowances)

  • To produce high quality machining work (including turning and milling) to close tolerances working to sketches, engineering drawings and verbal instructions as appropriate
  • Produce appropriate jigs and fittings as necessary
  • Take ownership for tasks associated with the build, assembly, modification and installation of new projects connected with the ISIS accelerator
  • Repair and maintenance of a wide range of installed components within the Accelerator. Including a wide and diverse range of magnets, diagnostic monitors, water circuits, vacuum assemblies and acceleration mechanical systems components. Training will be provided where necessary
  • Provide support for other staff working within a given areas including apprentices and new starters
  • Ensure you establish and maintain a safe and efficient working arrangement for yourself and for any staff working within your area.

Shortlisting (S) and Interview (I) Criteria


  • Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent (S)
  • Relevant experience as a machinist and in mechanical fitting (S&I)
  • Quality of cover letter (S)
  • High level of skill/experience as a machinist and in mechanical fitting (S&I)
  • Working knowledge of safety issues and current health and safety legislation. (I)


  • ONC in mechanical engineering or equivalent (or equivalent experience) (S&I)
  • Experience of working in a large scale facility (S)
  • Ability to fault-find and resolve technical problems (I)
  • Working knowledge of ionising radiation safety regulations (S&I)
  • Computer skills/working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. (S&I)
