About the role

STFC is looking for a new Risk and Assurance manager reporting to its Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the UKRI Risk and Assurance Business Partner, providing direct operational support and delivery for risk and assurance across STFC. The role will facilitate good governance and embed best practice across STFC through oversight of the agreed key retained function activities and provision of support through UKRI, in the development and maintenance of a robust risk management and assurance framework. You will also provide appropriate back-up for business continuity working in close collaboration with the Business Continuity Manager.

This role is responsible for leading and developing the strategic direction of the risk management, ensuring that risk principles and framework are aligned to the group. Managing operational risks and developing a robust risk strategy will be at the forefront of what you do.

You should ideally possess the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Knowledge and experience of risk management and assurance frameworks, and risk appetite
  • Proactive approach to continuous improvement
  • Capability to engage with and influence staff at senior level
  • Excellent attention to detail, planning and organisation skills
  • Advanced inter-personal skills, particularly in communication, networking, motivation and problem-solving
  • Be an effective communicator and influencer, with strong experience of written and verbal communication at different levels of management
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence, persuade and negotiate
  • Strong ability to think creatively, to seek and accept change and continuous improvement
  • Resilience, multi-tasking and ability to work to deadlines
  • Self-sufficient in use of office IT systems, including Microsoft Office, especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint and Easy Risk
  • Reflection of STFC values in behaviour and attitude to develop, communicate and embed best practice across the business
  • Ability to establish strong trusted relationships and liaising with the divisions.

You will be appointed at Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.
