About the role

Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance duties to sustain and improve electrical systems and services to support STFC’s world-class scientific programme.

You will be responsible for undertaking the efficient and effective day-to-day execution of maintenance activities relating to the electrical services and assets at 3 STFC sites - RAL, Chilbolton Observatory and The Cosener’s House.

You will report to the Electrical Services Manager, undertaking maintenance to ensure the provision of safe and reliable electrical services across the STFC estate, ensuring they meet or exceed relevant industry standards and comply with STFC’s SHE codes. Standards are maintained through an ongoing proactive programme of maintenance regimes (planned preventative/reactive/condition based) that you are responsible for the continuous development and execution of - managed through a CAFM software package. You will also have an active role in the installation of new/replacement electrical services and systems across the estate.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out Legionella control based planned maintenance activities (temperature readings, flushing etc.)
  • Assist in water quality auditing of potable and closed heating/cooling systems
  • Assist the Building Services Maintenance Manager in the operation and control of the site water distribution main
  • Carry out planned routine emergency light testing to all relevant buildings
  • Carry out fire alarm isolations for both STFC estates services and their nominated contractors
  • Carrying out routine sampling of PAT tested assets and labelling for completeness
  • Assist the Estates Compliance Supervisor, Authorising Engineer and the estates helpdesk to maintain accurate and up to date compliance test records
  • Ensuring that all work carried out on STFC’s estate is completed in an effective and professional manner and that all current safety and technical legislation is adhered to, including:
    • Assess risk assessments and method statements (produced for in-house staff)
    • Safe systems of work (permits/isolation procedures/hot works/testing and re-commissioning)
    • Ensure that works are completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion to reduce their impact upon scientific programmes
    • Accept training in future developments and technologies as required
    • Take on additional authorised person responsibilities as required (permit control/key issuing etc.)
    • Ability to be included ‘on call’ during silent hours (one week in five, as part of a planned rotation)
    • Mentoring and development of team members (including the support of apprentices and trainees formal programmes of learning)
    • Champion the estates service in a positive manner
    • Deliver a high level of customer service
    • Attend appropriate training to support the role and service delivery
    • Any other reasonable management request.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • A basic relevant technical qualification or experience in technical role
  • Good knowledge of document L8 and its practical application (will also been tested at interview)
  • Proven experience in the building services industry (will also been tested at interview)
  • Knowledge of safety legislation (will also been tested at interview)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Desirable:

  • Successfully completed a time-served trade apprenticeship
  • Experience in operating water distribution systems
  • Asbestos awareness trained
  • IPAF and PASMA trained.

Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • Good working knowledge of electrical services and associated engineering practices
  • Knowledge of permit systems and their practical application
  • Ability to work in a methodical and structured way
  • Confidence in dealing with suppliers and service users
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Conscientiousness and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Desirable:

  • Experience in operating water distribution systems
  • Good understanding of H&S legislation
  • Basic knowledge of CAFM systems.
