Delivering a modern, flexible and resilient Building Management Control System – to maximise the operating efficiency of the scientific estate’s built environment.

You will report to the Building Management Systems (BMS) Manager and be responsible for undertaking the efficient and effective day to day execution of development and maintenance activities relating to a range of BEMS and HVAC Controls systems at 3 STFC sites; RAL, Chilbolton Observatory and Cosener’s House. You will undertake the execution of a bespoke plan of maintenance activities to safeguard the provision of resilient services across the STFC estate and ensures that these services meet or exceed relevant industry standards and comply with STFC’s SHE codes. You will support the strategic and practical continuous development of the site controls network, bolstering resilience and flexibility, whilst harnessing the latest industry technological developments. You will also work closely with STFC’s Energy Manager and Building Services Manager to ensure that controls systems maximise the energy efficiency of the assets and environments they control and take an active role in developing a condition-based approach to HVAC maintenance.

  • Support the BMS Manager to work efficiently and effectively; issuing and signing off work through the STFC designated CAFM package
  • Mentoring and development of fellow team members (including the support of Apprentices and trainees through formal programmes of learning)
  • Undertaking BMS, HVAC Controls planned maintenance, remedial works, minor installation work and upgrades; including any associated plant shutdowns
  • Developing and maximising the sites BMS infrastructure and assets, utilising best industry practices and striving for continuous development
  • To undertake control panel manufacture and testing
  • Carry out system integrations to 3rd party systems
  • Upgrade, modify and standardise software control strategies to optimise efficiencies
  • Champion the Estates service in a positive manner
  • Deliver a high level of customer service
  • Attend appropriate training to support the role and service delivery
  • Any other reasonable management request.

Shortlisting Criteria


  • Degree/HND/ONC in engineering – ideally electrically biased
  • Completed a formal apprenticeship or training scheme in an engineering environment
  • Extensive experience of Trend BMS systems
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and integration to 3rd party systems
  • Ability to design and modify control strategies to maximise system and energy efficiency
  • Excellent understanding of I.T. infrastructure.


  • Experience working in the Building Services Sector
  • A wide general knowledge and awareness of the issues and themes relevant to a large technical campus and its Estates development and issues
  • Formal Health and Safety qualification
  • Knowledge and experience of Resource Data Management systems.

Interview Criteria


  • Extensive experience of Trend BMS systems
  • To understand control panel design, manufacture, design and testing

  • Skills and experience to design, produce and manipulate dynamic ‘front end’ interface graphics
  • Excellent understanding of I.T. infrastructure
  • Effective communicator with specialist and non-specialist colleagues
  • Commitment to continuous personnel improvement and recognised quality standards
  • Ability to work well independently and/or as part of a team
  • Flexible to meet business demands
  • Good time management skills
  • You must display strong diplomatic and organisational skills to ensure work is carried out efficiently and with minimum disruption to the scientific programme.

  • Experience of dealing with external consultants and marshalling information in a timely manner
  • Knowledge and experience of Resource Data Management systems.
