The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world’s leading laser centres, providing scientists mainly from the UK and continental Europe with access to an unparalleled range of state of the art laser technology. The CLF has around 180 staff and its function - user facility, international research – makes it a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place. The CLF is building a new laser centre - the Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) and is seeking new team members to help to build this and to contribute to our existing facilities. EPAC is an £81M facility that will use lasers developed by our team to drive new types of novel particle and radiation beams that can be applied to a wide range of problems in science and industry. We are seeking a professional Engineer with knowledge, experience and attitude to contribute to UK’ science. You will be working within the Electrical and Control team playing a critical part in designing control system architecture for our multimillion project and working in the operations of one of the world’s leading laser facilities.

You will need to be up to date with PLC and related control system technology and/or CAD design. You will need to able to work in a team or independently and able to manage project tasks when required.

What you will be working on:

  • Getting user requirements and translate them into working solutions
  • Evaluating the best technical setup for the future of the facility
  • Collaborating with mechanical designers, software engineers and scientist to build new systems
  • Ensuring all projects schematics and designs detail are accurately documented and maintained
  • Being the technical expert on electrical and control hardware issues
  • Getting involved in the prototype of bespoke developments, from design to final validation
  • Ensuring all prototypes are designed and built to the correct/desired electrical standard and are safe for use
  • Ensuring commissioning of systems meets the specifications and criteria of the project
  • Designing and commissioning PLC based control systems.

The role requires working with members of different teams in a multicultural and very friendly environment and involves working closely with research scientists, electrical engineers and leading university research groups from Europe and the UK.

  • Schneider and Siemens PLC’s
  • Ethernet Based field Buses (Modbus TCP, Profinet, EtherCAT)
  • Programmable HMI’s from different vendors
  • AutoCAD Electrical
  • Micron Motion Control Systems.

Essential Band D

  • Knowledge and practical experience of modern electrical engineering, components and techniques (S)
  • Working knowledge of PLC (S&I)
  • Experience in a supporting role (S&I)

  • HND in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering. (S)

Desirable Band D

  • Knowledge of motion control (I)
  • Experience of working in a highly complex technical environment or scientific research environment (I)
  • Knowledge of project task management (S&I)
  • Experience working developing systems from customers’ requirements to commissioning (S&I)
  • Experience connecting and troubleshooting PLC based systems. (S&I)

 Essential Band E – the Band D essentials plus:

  • Experience working developing systems from customers’ requirements to commissioning (S&I)
  • Proven experience designing and programming PLC based systems (S&I)
  • Experience in the management of projects and/or people. (I)

Desirable Band E

  • Knowledge and experience of project management techniques (I)
  • Experience of working in a highly complex technical environment or scientific research environment (I)
  • Good understanding of motion control (I)
  • AutoCAD Electrical experience (S&I)
  • A broad understanding of other engineering disciplines (software, mechanical etc.) (I)
  • Experience in financial planning/budget control (I)
  • Degree in Electrical Design, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics. (S)
