About the role

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) has a small manufacturing and assembly team dedicated to delivering the engineering hardware for the CLF’s operational program. This is a dynamic, low volume, fast response prototype team skilled to utilise a range of CNC and manual machines. This team also supports the upgrading of labs and facilities which would include, cooling water, gas, vacuum and cryogenic systems.

We're looking for an agile team leader to manage the small team and grow the skill base.

There is significant scope for personal development and staff development. This wide role would suit both an established and hands on Machine Shop Manager/Supervisor or a Machinist with leadership experience looking to take the next step and diversify.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing a team of five staff and up to two apprentices
  • Planning and managing the team’s output in an efficient and safe manner
  • Managing the maintenance and reliability of the machinery and infrastructure
  • Training and development of the team
  • Developing and delivering upgrades to engineering systems and processes.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria


  • Apprenticeship or Engineering qualification, either NVQ/ONC/HNC/HND or equivalent experience
  • Experienced in traditional manual and CNC machining
  • A good understanding of engineering practices and methods
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Have a good understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles, such as engineering materials
  • Have a good understanding of safe systems of work and associated documentation and procedures.


  • Team leading experience
  • Be able to check or produce 2D manufacturing drawings
  • Experience of risk assessment and method statements
  • A Forklift truck license
  • Experience of operating overhead cranes
  • Experience working on industrial or scientific vacuum systems
  • Experience working on cooling water systems
  • Experience working on nitrogen or helium gas systems
  • Experience working with cryogens.
