Team Purpose

  • We provide creative, design and production services to the whole of UKRI, including all the Councils and other organisations associated with them. Our aim is to deliver an outstanding standard of creative design, account management and print production services, offering integrated services across print and digital media, as well as range of complementary services
  • We have a client-centred, collaborative can-do approach and working attitude, helping our clients in defining their briefs and solving the challenges they face. We offer doorstep convenience and accessibility to services developed specifically with our clients’ needs in mind, and continually evolve our services in consultation with them – our goal is to give our clients the services they want, need and will use

Job Purpose

  • The Senior Designer is responsible for developing and managing all aspects of the creative output. This is a demanding role, with accountability for online and offline design output. The role will require you to develop your own designs as well collaborating with the team’s overall creative development
  • You will ensure that the creative solutions are aligned to client expectations and delivered to the highest standard, on time and on budget. You will work closely with our Head of Design, design, production and accounts management teams for internal and external clients, and fully understanding our clients’ needs
  • You will use your experience and knowledge to continuously review processes and practices, with a view to enhance creativity, improve efficiency and overall workflow throughout the studio.

Responsibilities and Activities

  • Designing
  • Take a brief from concept through to delivery, whether it is for print, online or display, and deliver high quality creative design solutions
  • Ensuring your work is on brief and exceeds clients’ expectations in all stages of the design process
  • Develop creative solutions within respective clients’ brand guidelines, on time and within budget, and with a very sharp eye for detail
  • Commercial accountability through accurate scoping and quoting of work.

Communication

  • Supporting the creative team with considered, informed and inspiring feedback, with the aim to improve quality results
  • Influencing design-led thinking and culture across the team and organisation.

  • Maintaining a client-centred, positive and inspiring culture
  • Playing an active role in the JRS Senior the wider JRS team.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential

  • A strong portfolio showing creativity and high quality design solutions
  • Demonstrable and well-developed problem solving skills
  • Cross-media design abilities and knowledge (print, digital and display)
  • Extensive knowledge of digital design, including digital animation skills
  • A good commercial awareness for accurate scoping and quoting of work
  • Ability to prioritise own workload with minimal supervision
  • Ability to write a solid rationale for your ideas and presenting your own work
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to details
  • Ability to work with Macs and Mac software.

Desirable

  • Experience in working in or with the science, research, innovation or higher education sectors
  • A degree (or equivalent) in a design related subject, or equivalent practical on the job experience.

Interview Criteria

Essential

  • Evidence of a proven track record of high quality design experience
  • Good judgement and analytical skills, with a clear and solid rationale for your ideas
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present your work
  • Cross-media design abilities and knowledge (print, digital and display)
  • Extensive knowledge of digital design, including digital animation skills
  • A good communicator, confident and well organised
  • A positive can do attitude and team mentality
  • Can work to tight deadlines, and can manage multiple projects and budgets well
  • Ability to work well with a team but also have the initiative to work on your own
  • A sharp eye for detail
  • Confidence to speak own mind but also to be a good listener
  • Understanding of the latest development and trends in design
  • Ability to articulate a clear understanding of the role and challenges of the Senior Designer
  • Ability to show initiative beyond the immediate area of responsibility, to support wider organisational goals and culture.

Desirable

  • Experience in working in or with the science, research, innovation or higher education sectors.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
