We promote international links at the policy level and between researchers, and we work in collaboration with Councils in UKRI and UK stakeholders in many of our international activities.

Main Job Activities

We are looking for a Head of European and Global Partnerships to provide:

  • Strategy development, planning and coordinated delivery of all aspects of UKRI-BBSRC European and Global activities, working with and influencing across UKRI, with UKRI shared capability and with UK Government Departments
  • Collective and collaborative partnership working with other senior leaders in UKRI-BBSRC to ensure international activities encompass strategic aims in research, capability, innovation and delivery
  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting of current UKRI-BBSRC international investments, including the Fund for International Collaboration and any other non-Official Development Assistance programmes, their programme funds and operational budget
  • Strategic development of UKRI-BBSRC approaches to establishing and sustaining corporate and other linkages across Europe, maintaining current and developing new strategic partnerships, through bilateral and multilateral engagement, using mechanisms, programmes and activities that support the long-term goals in the UKRI-BBSRC Delivery Plan
  • Strategic development of UKRI-BBSRC approaches to maintaining and developing partnerships and collaborations with priority countries in North America, Asia and Australasia, through bilateral and multilateral engagement, using mechanisms, programmes and activities that support the long-term goals in the UKRI-BBSRC Delivery Plan
  • Identification of future challenges, areas, regions and countries in Europe and other research-intensive countries in the world where UKRI-BBSRC engagement and investments can best contribute to serve our strategic objectives
  • Design and preparation of high level UKRI-BBSRC missions to key strategic partners in Europe and overseas, and follow up with the design and/or update of country engagement plans and their implementation
  • Effective working and fruitful interactions with UKRI Offices in Europe and overseas, and with the UK Government’s Science and Innovation Network
  • UKRI-BBSRC representation on various cross-UKRI groups and external bodies ensuring UKRI-BBSRC priorities are advanced within wider decisions
  • Representation at external meetings and UK delegations in Europe and overseas as well as hosting and presenting to delegations visiting UK and UKRI-BBSRC. This will involve regular travel within the UK and overseas
  • Leadership of International Relations Unit team members
  • Deputising for the Associate Directors of International as required.

Person Specification

Attainments (A), General Intelligence (GI), Special Skills (SS), Special Requirements, Physical Make up (PM).

Essential

  • Degree in a biological or related subject, and/or previous relevant experience
  • A well-developed understanding of UKRI-BBSRC’s strategy and its mechanisms for supporting research and innovation
  • Proven experience of developing and delivering research strategy and/or programmes of research, or research-related investments
  • Broad experience of stakeholder management across partners and teams. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and networks internally and externally, including international partners, at a senior level
  • Ability to lead, develop and support team members to work both independently and cooperatively within a team and take ownership of key objectives and actions
  • Ability to independently plan and effectively prioritise delivery of a diverse portfolio of activities within agreed timescales and budgets, responding effectively to pressures exerted by rapidly changing demands, conflicting priorities and resource limitations
  • Experience of programme and project management, including an aptitude for financial and risk management
  • Ability and willingness to innovate and challenge established thinking in self and others, and support organisational flexibility and responsiveness
  • Ability to communicate effectively in different media, including the ability to listen, engage, influence, negotiate, and interpret and report complex information succinctly
  • Experience in engaging and managing individuals to work effectively to deliver their own tasks and to contribute to corporate goals, including through effective line management.

Desirable

  • PhD or Masters Degree in a life sciences subject, and/or previous relevant experience
  • Understanding of the peer review process, an awareness of science policy issues and an aptitude for working effectively in a diplomatic context
  • Understanding of the purpose of international collaborations.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
