We currently have a vacancy for an HR Assistant. This role provides direct support to HR Advisors’, employees and line managers’ within the UK Research Innovation STFC based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Its principal focus is to provide high quality transactional administrative support for all HR activities and to proactively support the HR Department on a diverse range of activities in support of corporate campaigns and other HR initiatives.

You will assist line managers and employees on generic HR policy and process answer queries whilst championing the use of HR Oracle self-service. You will involve working closely with the UK Shared Business Services and STFC UKRI Staff.

A high degree of teamwork is fundamental to all aspects of this role. You will be an enthusiastic, flexible and proactive individual with strong inter-personal skills, capable of applying policies and processes to professional HR standards.

Key Responsibilities include

  • Provide advice to employees and managers’ on STFC policy and processes
  • Champion the use of HR self-service options to provide assistance to line managers and employees on generic HR policy and process queries
  • Handle, manage and analyse data where required, and to run Management Information  reports to assist with the smooth running of the department and also in support of initiatives within the department
  • Support HR Advisors from time to time in the management of personal cases, for example acting as a note taker at formal meetings and making arrangements for attendance at those meetings
  • Ensure all transactional activities relating to At Work and Leaving Work are approved and submitted for processing to the UK SBS in an accurate and timely manner and within payroll cut off deadlines
  • Support HR initiatives and internal and major (Transformation) projects, as appropriate
  • Manage STFC flexible working system alongside other HR Assistants, setting up new starters, answering queries and dealing with challenging enquiries and solving them
  • Contribute to the discussions of the HR team, as a result of keeping up to date with professional developments and trends, in the introduction and operation of best practice business processes
  • Deliver basic manager skills training
  • Look for opportunities to continuously improve in-house HR related processes, also in conjunction with the UKSBS
  • Display the confidence to act independently and decisively, including being able to judge when to refer elsewhere for advice.

Shortlisting Criteria



  • Qualified to A Level standard or equivalent.


  • CIPD qualification.

Knowledge and Experience


  • Previous experience working in HR
  • Experience in a customer focused role
  • Competent in the use of IT (Outlook, Word, Excel, Oracle).


  • Previous experience or knowledge of working with a shared services centre
  • Knowledge and use of Oracle and other HR systems and processes.

Personal Skills and Qualities


  • Good written communication skills evidenced by both a good cover letter and CV.

  • Demonstrate a continuous improvement approach
  • Occasional requirement to travel to other STFC sites as required
  • Discrete and diplomatic
  • Ability to prioritise, well-motivated and capable at times of working under pressure
  • Excellent communications skills both written and oral 
  • A high level of flexibility.


  • Pursuing or working towards a professional HR qualification.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research.
