The Science and Technology Facilities Council brings strategic leadership to UK investments in large national and international research facilities, together with delivering world-class science and technology. The Council is involved in some of the world’s most advanced facilities, such as ISIS.

ISIS is a world-leading source of pulsed neutrons and muons located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level. 

A wide variety of electrical engineering systems are used across the ISIS facility. These include single and three phase low voltage (LV) power distribution, high voltage (HV) power supplies, analog and digital signal and control, PLC and relay based alarm and control, radio-frequency power, vacuum control, multi-axis motion control, personnel protection and machine safety.

There is now an opportunity for a high-calibre electrical engineer to join the Safety Systems team within the ISIS Design Division and work closely with fellow engineers and scientists to provide bespoke and fully optimised safety interlock systems for the ISIS facility.

Job Role

As part of the ISIS Design Division Electrical (IDDE) Safety Systems team, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of bespoke of optimised interlock systems protecting against hazards including ionizing radiation, machinery, high voltage and lasers.

You will be working on the assessment of existing equipment and systems, modification of operational systems as well as clean sheet designs to meet customer specifications and both internal and relevant published standards. You will work to structured project management techniques encompassing the full lifecycle i.e. concept, detail design, procurement, manufacture, installation, commissioning, operation and eventually decommissioning.

You will have a background in an appropriate engineering discipline and experience in the implementation of control systems. Experience of participation in safety lifecycle activities at high hazard facilities in the process or machinery sectors is desirable, although all relevant industrial experience will be considered.

Key duties:

  • Full lifecycle, bespoke safety system solutions, providing optimised designs from concept to manufacture, installation, operation and decommissioning
  • Production of technical design and associated documentation
  • Production of technical drawings using AutoCAD
  • Prototyping and demonstration of system designs for review
  • Presentation of engineering designs for peer and stakeholder review
  • Provision of top level electrical engineering expertise to ISIS
  • Production of design risk assessments to maintain ALARP levels of facility safety
  • Support the development of inherently safe designs through participation in Risk Assessment/HAZID/HAZOP Activities to evaluate designs and apply risk reduction techniques to recommend proportionate measures to reduce or eliminate hazards
  • Supporting the development of, safety system documentation, i.e. functional specifications, Safety Requirements Specifications, SIL Verifications and Validation Plans
  • Provide inputs into reviews of existing installations against established standards and recommend and implement modifications to maintain safety
  • Production of budget estimates, project programs and documentation for future work packages
  • Management of tendering, procurement and delivery of approved designs
  • Direct Project Management of assigned projects and work packages.

  • Degree, or equivalent, in an appropriate Engineering discipline. (S)


  • HNC/HND, or equivalent, in an appropriate Engineering discipline, combined with significant and relevant experience of control system development and electrical design and project management, with a keen interest in safety systems. (S)


  • IET member or associate member (S)
  • Formal project management qualification (S)
  • Formal functional safety qualification. (S)

Knowledge and experience


  • Experience in producing high quality electrical design engineering solutions to meet demanding technical and scientific requirements (S&I)
  • A keen interest in the area of control system development, with the goal of controlling hazards and ensuring safe working environments (S&I)
  • Demonstrable experience in an electrical design environment (S)
  • Experience of working on technical projects within a project environment (S)
  • Experience of AutoCAD and associated technical document management systems (S)
  • Fully conversant with electrical circuit diagrams and 2D drawings (S&I)
  • A good working knowledge of British and European electrical design and safety standards. (S&I)


  • Experience in the development of IEC 61508/61511/BS EN 13849 functional safety systems and participation in the full safety lifecycle (S&I)
  • Experience in any of the following areas: (S&I)
    • Hazard Identification and analysis to ISO 12100:2010
    • Generation of safety requirement specifications
    • Experience in the design and development of PLC and/or relay based safety interlock systems
    • Experience in assessment and analysis of existing safety systems against current best practice
    • Experience in the verification and validation of safety systems
  • Knowledge and experience of laser interlock system design requirements and implementation (I)
  • Knowledge and experience of machinery panel design to IEC 60204 (S&I)
  • Previous design and installation experience within a scientific facility (I)
  • Project management skills, responsible for time, cost and specification control (I)
  • Experience of designing for radiation environments (I)
  • Experience of designing for high voltage environments (I)
  • Experience in design risk assessments and installation method statements (I)
  • Experience of design and installations under CDM regulations. (I)
