About The Role

The Experimental Operations Division has a vacancy for a Technical Manager to provide operational support to the neutron and muon instruments. With a creative flair and an enthusiastic and energetic approach, the successful candidate will also be responsible for the delivery of upgrades to the ISIS instrument suite.

You will manage a team of seven technical staff, and lead installation project teams of contractors and technical experts too. The role requires ability to discuss the scientific needs, strong leadership capability, effective time management, prioritisation and delegation skills.

You must inspire, motivate, support and coach your teams, applying best practice and a continuous improvement philosophy as well as introducing new concepts and innovations.

Further duties will include:

  • Maintain oversight of shutdown management
  • Managing and organising technical effort to trouble shoot failures on neutron and muon beamlines
  • Project management (including scheduling, budgets, planning and reporting)
  • Managing both internal staff and external technical effort
  • Coordinating the activities of various different technical disciplines to achieve the required outcome
  • Assist your group with tendering, procurement of equipment and contracted out work.

About You

  • You will have a formal scientific or engineering qualifications and relevant experience
  • High quality communication, interpersonal and influencing skills are essential for your interactions with STFC staff at all levels
  • In this role, you will develop a thorough understanding of scientific requirements and use that knowledge to guide engineers and technical staff in delivering reliable, robust and operable instrumentation
  • You will need to be able to develop the expertise that enables you to not only understand day-to-day operational demands, but also to apply operational strategies in a constantly changing leading edge scientific facility.

You should also demonstrate:

  • A background in Research and Development, Engineering or Operations within high technology organisations or national scientific laboratories
  • A track record of coordinating a number of different technical disciplines across a broad range of tasks to achieve overall project goals
  • Experience of Project Management either as an individual, or by managing the work of others
  • Experience in producing solutions to meet common mechanical and scientific needs
  • Experience of people management.

  • Second degree in Physical Science or Engineering (S)
  • Chartered status with Physical Science or Engineering body (S)
  • Managing teams of staff of various technical backgrounds. (S & I)
