The Role

You will be responsible for a part of the Innovation Scholars Programme. More specifically duties will include:

  • Develop and scope calls and other activities under the umbrella of the Innovation Scholars Programme
  • Work with other colleagues from UKRI Talent and Skills team at MRC, Innovate UK and other partners to deliver calls and other activities within the Innovation Scholars Programme
  • Acting as a point of escalation for applicant enquires and post award queries within the programme
  • Have oversight of panels and boards for the programme and acting, when required, as convenor for panel meetings
  • Coordinating the monitoring and evaluation of funded activities under the Innovation Scholars Programme. This will include data analysis and interaction with the holders of grants
  • Work with the Director of the Innovations Scholars programme to help develop new activity within the programmes remit, objectives and vision. This will require working with internal and external stakeholders
  • There is a possibility of line management responsibility for one or more individuals within this role
  • Additional duties relating to broader UKRI Talent and Skills activities, including work associated with Future Leaders Fellowships, may be allocated to you from time to time.

  • Innovation Scholars Programme Director
  • Staff Management: Initially no management responsibilities but there may be in the future.

Interactions

In addition to close working relationships with senior staff, other Senior Programme Managers and the UKRI Talent and Skills team at MRC, the role involves developing and maintaining a broad range of working relationships within UKRI and its councils and externally; including:

  • Board/Panel member
  • Researchers
  • Business people and representatives of other bodies and organisations
  • UKRI staff at all levels in areas that relate to the funding activity
  • The university sector and government stakeholders.

Additional information

You will be required to frequently work in the opposite (London) office and be willing to stay overnight and work long hours on an occasional basis. Additional UK travel may also be necessary.

Education/Qualifications/Training required:

Essential

  • Have a relevant degree or equivalent experience.

Knowledge and experience:

Essential

  • An understanding of the role of UK Research and Innovation and an enthusiasm for the importance of people (talent and skills) within the research and innovation system
  • Significant experience in research, research management, research commissioning or related roles within the research and innovation sector, or ability to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and understanding
  • Good understanding of the differences between the academic and business research and innovation environments and their respective communities
  • An understanding of the principles of peer review and its associated processes and systems
  • An understanding of the development and motivation of others in the context of line management or team leadership.

Desirable

  • An understanding of GDPR
  • An understanding of the Innovate UK funding process and the Innovation Funding Service.

Personal skills/behaviours/qualities:

Essential

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to positively influence
  • An ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders at different levels of seniority
  • Analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong project management, organisation and prioritisation skills
  • An ability to think strategically developing and delivering on strategic priorities.

UKRI supports research in areas that include animal health, agriculture and food security, and bioscience for health which includes research on animals, genetic modification and stem cell research. Whilst you may not have direct involvement in this type of research, you should consider whether this conflicts with your personal values or beliefs.
