As an experienced platform manager, you will lead and own the infrastructure platform products and life cycles. You will ensure our platform services continue to meet the needs of the business, working closely with other product managers to ensure that appropriate underpinning infrastructure is available across the product and scape. You will work closely with colleagues across UKRI to ensure the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) strategy roadmap is met.

You will ensure that a tactical roadmap for development of the infrastructure platforms is in place and that this aligns with, and evolve in parallel with, other product areas.

Additionally, will provide technical leadership to a team, ensuring adequate resources are in place and that the team is developed, and services are improved.

A platform product manager is responsible for the platform vision &strategy as well as the delivery of this. At this level, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading the Platform function within Live Operations and develop the services and capabilities of the team, as well as the personal development of those within it
  • Creating and developing an infrastructure platform strategy covering existing on-premise and cloud (initially Azure, but likely to evolve) hosting, ensuring that stable, resilient and robust platforms are in place to underpin the delivery of services
  • Analysing business requirements, translate these into measurable problems and identify solutions
  • Consolidation of existing cloud infrastructure offerings across UKRI
  • Defining the vision of how to develop the platform area in order to maximise value for the business. The product owner will have a clear view of the direction of travel and will own, maintain & implement the product roadmap, working with business stakeholders, head of departments, suppliers & architects to ensure it allows UKRI to meet its strategic priorities and the delivery plan
  • Championing and promoting the use of the technology in question across both internal and external stakeholders
  • Overseeing product development – whether enhancing the product or adding functionality or as part of continuous improvement in conjunction with the service owner
  • Leading the change introduction process – aligning with the service delivery lifecycle and coordinating with project managers, service transition analysts and services owners for major service changes and services owners and the change process for smaller change introduction
  • Managing the product backlog, prioritizing developments, balancing business need with available budget and resources and adapting the backlog alongside changes to the roadmap
  • Ensuring that the team are delivering in an agile and adaptive manner
  • Working with service management to transition new developments into service, either within internal team or external delivery partners
  • Maintaining a clear overview of technology developments and the market within your product area
  • Anticipating stakeholder needs through regular communication and utilizing product knowledge to address needs. Chairing product working groups
  • Acting as the primary liaison between business product stakeholders and delivery teams
  • Representing the business at technology events related to the area
  • Working collaboratively with other DDaT stakeholders to ensure processes, systems and technology are appropriately aligned to the correct toolset to maximize our investments
  • Working with the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) service management team to ensure service issues are documented and addressed fully. Assist in the development of KPIs to measure performance of the service
  • Maintaining clear visibility of ongoing costs within the platform area.

  • Excellent technical knowledge of supporting and managing a diverse range of IT services, particularly in the areas of
    • Hosting technologies and best practice – in house hosting and virtualization technologies, IaaS, PaaS (particularly Azure, AWS
    • Operating systems, applications, storage & compute
    • Performance and capacity management of environments and delivery of associated too
    • Backup and DR solution
    • Automation of deployment & scaling where possible and maintenance of associated tooling
  • Overview of developments in technology areas outlined above
  • Experience of developing and implementing technology roadmaps aligned to a wider strategy
  • Experience of leading technical teams with a track record of mentoring and developing staff
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrable experience working with 3rd party delivery partners driving value and performance improvements
  • Good vendor management experience involving on-shore / off-shore end user technical support models
  • Demonstratable experience of evidence-based decisions and following agreed processes and policies, and challenging where appropriate

  • Degree level qualification is not essential but is desirable, it is more important to be able to demonstrate current projects you have worked on and your role in them
  • A good knowledge of ITIL framework (Incident, Problem, Change and Request processes)
  • Project management experience
  • Experience of public sector or government organizations
  • Financial and budgetary experience, with a strong understanding of how to deliver value for money.
