About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest science research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC is one of nine partner organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

About the Hartree Centre

At the Hartree Centre, we utilise the UK’s premier supercomputing environment, researchers and software developers, to provide an outcome based collaborative R&D service to help UK Industry and Academia develop better products, services, processes and software.

We want to see UK businesses outperforming their global competitors. We want to grow the economy, create skilled jobs and train people to excel in them. Most of all, we want to keep the UK at the forefront of industrial innovation. We're making all this happen and more by enabling UK industry to fully embrace and integrate the latest digital and cognitive technologies.

We provide collaborative research, innovation and development services that accelerate the application of high performance computing (HPC), big data analytics and cognitive computing technologies. By working with us, businesses and research partners can gain a competitive advantage that enables them to produce better outcomes, products and services, more quickly and cheaply than through conventional R&D.

We have a technically exciting computing environment, encompassing a wide range of hardware and software. Our staff are instrumental to our success and new starters will be members of a valued, multi-disciplinary team.

Reasons our staff enjoy working for us:

  • We’re based at Sci-Tech Daresbury - a lively and dynamic campus bringing together Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and leading industry-academic collaborations located in a picturesque semi-rural location with easy access to canal-side and woodland walking
  • We are less than two miles from the M56 motorway with public transport links and access to Warrington and Runcorn national rail stations. Advice on all aspects of travel to site including car sharing is available at:
  • Diversity and inclusion are critical to us. We have a corporate policy on Equality and Diversity which is supported by a Diversity Forum and implementation group. For more information on the rest of our employee benefits, take a look at:
  • Staff personal development is vital to our success, you will work with your line manager to develop your own Learning and Development plan each year
  • 30 days’ annual leave plus 10.5 public and privilege days
  • Flexible working hours scheme
  • Defined benefit pension scheme (employer contribution – currently up to 26%)
  • There are a number of active sport and social groups across campus with access to an on-site gym for staff
  • We value collaborative working across STFC and with our external collaborators such as IBM Research, The University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre, Atos, NVIDIA, Unilever and many more
  • Our offices are a mixture of open-plan and smaller, shared spaces
  • A variety of catering services are available on the local campus.

About the role

The continuing success of the Hartree Centre means we are looking for talented people with experience of Openstack (or its derivatives) in a deployment, administration or development role to join our Systems Engineering group.

  • You will work on Systems Engineering group projects as a member of the wider Hartree Technology team. These could be grant funded research projects or industrial projects working with scientists and technologists from other domains
  • You will be supporting UK industry and academia in realising the benefits of several technologies: Cyber Security, Machine Learning at Scale, High Performance Computing and High Performance Data Analytics. These activities are undertaken in partnership with industry, vendors and research partners in order to demonstrate the benefit of implementing new technology solutions to industrial and academic problems through collaboration and co-design
  • You will be responsible for supporting the translation of designs into reality, creating functional systems to support the activities of the Centre, creating a bridge between development and operations by applying a systems engineering mindset to traditional administration topics. These systems will range from traditional HPC, through HTC, to platforms supporting cloud-native architectures
  • As this role will be working on projects and international collaborations it is likely to involve the opportunity for travel both to Europe and the USA
  • You will be appointed at Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About you

  • You will be an experienced systems administrator, systems developer or site reliability engineer, with experience in systems design and implementation, combining multiple software solutions to create a service that users rely on
  • Experienced with Openstack in at least one of the following roles; as an engineer, an architect, an operator or an infrastructure developer
  • You will also demonstrate experience in Linux, Scripting e.g. bash, Perl, and software development
  • You will have experience of communicating with both internal and external stakeholders on a project, while experience of coordinating work packages as part of a larger project will be beneficial
  • Experience of defining external projects from conception through to implementation planning would be highly advantageous
  • You will be excited by the opportunity to develop novel technology solutions to real world problems, working with industry and technology partners from a range of sectors and disciplines to deliver successful solutions
  • You will demonstrate the ability to identify and implement solutions to bridge gaps between existing software capabilities.

We would very much like to hear from you if you are interested in a career in this area. If you don’t meet all the criteria for this role, please apply, stating in your covering letter where you feel your current strengths lie, and where you feel that you would benefit from further training. Skills and personal development opportunities will be made available, tailored to your specific needs and the needs of the Hartree Centre.
